What’s That You Say?
As you know from the videos we share here, Clara is quite the talker. But lately she’s started the weird / funny habit of talking gibberish. It mainly happens when she’s playing by herself, almost as if she knows her toys don’t understand English so why bother using real words? Or maybe she just doesn’t want us to understand what secret plan she’s hatching with her doll co-conspirators?

I have a twin sister and my Mom told me that when we were little we made up this secret language and would talk to each other in that language and speak English when we were talking to her. Maybe Clara has made up her own language to use with her dolls. Just a thought. She is too cute by the way!! Now that Riley is 7, I miss those days of a little one and that “small voice” they have!!
Haha, that’s so cute!

My twin girls, who are about 2 months younger than Clara, do the same thing! It’s hysterical! They have this big conversation going back and forth and laughing hysterically and we have no clue what they are talking about.
I would love to know what’s going on in their little heads – their imagination must be on overload. Adorable!
Haha, I bet that’s hilarious!

It seriously sounds like she’s speaking Elvish from The Lord of the Rings!Too cute! (yes, I’m a nerd)
Haha!

Random question, but what kind of camera do you use to take video with?
We used our Nikon D3200 (we use cell phones and our Flip camera too, the Nikon was just the closest to catch the action, haha).

You should hear my 4 year old Lila! It’s like what language ARE you speaking in? Totally weird. At least I now know mine is not the only one!
Maybe she has international toys and is speaking their language so they don’t feel left out. :-)
Maybe Clara is imitating a foreign language! My daughter (4) was quite the talker, too, and she did the same thing at that age. As the next few months went on, she’d say she was speaking French or Spanish.
Hah!
xo

That’s what I was thinking too! I’m not quite sure what dialect Clara was speaking though… Any linguistics students? Haha.
My four year old does that too. He’ll make up words and when we ask what he said, he’ll say “It was Spanish for [insert random thing/phrase].”
Haha!

My daughter is also 2 and is doing that when she’s alone in her playroom! I love listening in, but she quickly stops when she realizes I’m within earshot.
Clara is so sweet. :)
That is always so facinating to me! Because they sound so convincing…like it is a totally legit language.
ohhhh to be young again and speak in gibberish :)
My two-year old does the same thing, almost always during her solo imaginative play. She doesn’t seem to mind if we hear her, but if we try to participate, she gets shy and won’t do it anymore.
It’s probably so stalker-y of me, but whenever you post Clara stuff, I always think how cute it would be to see my Lucy play with her. I think they would get along great! (Don’t worry, I’m not really a creepy person. Just a goofy mom.)
Aw, I bet they’d be adorable together!

Actually, what Clara is doing is typical for kids her age and older. Kids will start making up their own language, talking in gibberish, and generally having a back and forth conversation with toys and imaginary friends. They kind of live in their own world :). Just a teacher’s perspective.
Aw, that’s sweet!

Thank you for sharing the videos.
I grew up in a non-video home, but have understood the value of them thanks to your sharing them and the birthday ones.
There are moments that we have captured in Susanna’s life that we will always cherish as a result.
Apparently my dog speaks “Clara” – when I watched this, he got up fom his evening nap and got very excited!
Hahah!

Haha I love the first part – “I have some lollies”
Way too cute. I definitely think she’s created a secret language with her dolls.
I love how she just runs off at the end, mid-conversation. Ahh, the attention span of a toddler!
to me–it sounds like she’s singing/saying some of the parts to the song-gangnam style….if you listen at one point it sounds like she says gangnam style. well, just my opinion.
Haha, that could be!
xo
s
I thought the same thing too
Super cute video aside, I think this is one of the first times I could really tell how tall she’s gotten! Particularly in ‘sizing’ her up next to the doll house; I remember when you guys built it and seeing her standing a bit dwarfed by its height! She’s getting so big (and gorgeous).
Oh yeah, she’s a tall bean!
xo
s
She knew she was being recorded so she was speaking in “code”? Like when you boss is listening?
Hahhaha!

My daughter did the same thing at that age. She’s now 15 and she and her friends will speak a gibberish language that only they can understand so us parents don’t know what they’re saying.
Haha, I love it! My friends and I made up our own sign language in grade school so teachers couldn’t tell us not to talk (technically we weren’t talking). So annoying of us! Haha!

We’re in the same boat with our 2 and a half year old son. Cracks me up and he absolutely loves it.
He’s also in this weird stage of language development where he’s actually becoming harder to understand. He seems to go through spurts where he starts using more and more words. Now that he is well beyond simple object and action words, he seems to enunciate less on the ones that are important in a given sentence. As the stay-at-home dad I’m becoming his de facto interpreter for everyone else.
That’s so cute!

I love how she stands and walks just on her toes. Future dancer?
i think she’s just signing “gangnum style” to a different tune =)
That’s so funny, someone else said that and she loves that song so it’s certainly possible!

My 3 year old speaks the same language. The sad part is for awhile there I thought I knew exactly what Clara was saying. I need to get out of the house.
when i was 9 my friend and i would talk in gibberish when we passed people on our street so they would think we were exotic and were secretly sisters from another country. haha!
also, my brother didnt start talking really until he was like 2, he learned just to grunt at things instead and i swear i understood his grunts and noises.
Hahaha, that’s hilarious!

John, Clara is telling you what the lucky lotto numbers are – quick, write them down! :)
Sounds like Gangnam style for sure!!
I can totally hear that, too!

Happy Weekend, Youngsters! :)

That’s too cute!
My two year old, Tobey, LOVES watching videos of Clara. She says, “Watch videos of Tobey’s baby.” I’m not sure why Clara is her “baby” since she’s older… :)
Haha, that’s so cute!

my 2.5 yr old daughter does that too! (she and clara had the same due date i think…. may 18th??? is that right? though mine came 2 weeks late!). but yes, she talks SO well, but lately has been incoherent when she’s just playing. maybe they’re just “over” the whole speak clearly thing. that is SUCH an 18 month old thing to do :)
Oh yeah! Clara’s due date was May 19th but she was a week early :)

are we sure it isn’t dothraki? :D
Hahahahahah! You never know…

Clara’s got such a great natural turnout for ballet, and she’s nice and tall too! She’d make such a pretty dancer!
BAHAHAHA!! I love the dramatic exit!!!
she is such a cute little noodle.
Clara is such a cutie. I just wanted to tell you what an amazing little girl she seems to be, obviously thanks to your parenting skills.
She seems very well behaved, outspoken and willing to play by herself, the latter a trait that a lot of little kids seems to sadly have lost.
Great parenting and thanks for sharing.
PS. For all it’s worth even if you have a bilingual child they still make up their own language too.
Haha, that’s so funny about bilingual kid’s making up a third language!

I love it! As a child, I spoke a ‘twin’ language with my sister, particularly in play. My mother started to keep a ‘dictionary’ as she began to recognize words. :)
Hilarious!

OMG… am I the only laughing at how many time the work caulk was used?! Drinking game anyone? :)
My sister was born not hearing, which we didn’t discover until she was about 9 months old. (A simple operation fixed it.) It delayed her speech and in her toddlerhood, she babbled in a language only I understood. (I’m 4 years older.) So everyone would ask me, “What did she say?” They could tell her things and she’d understand them, but she’d answer in her gibberish. People would ask me, “How do you know what she’s saying and how did you learn it?” I had no idea, and still don’t. :)
That’s so interesting Ana! I love it!

My daughter (two days older than Clara) started the same thing this month. Glad to hear that she’s right on target!
My son will be three in June and he’s a big talker, too. Maybe they’ve just gotten bored with the English language. lol He even sings in gibberish now, on purpose.
too cute! does she make up words for things, too? my son is about a month younger than Clara and he just decided that cars are no longer cars, they are “bloom-blahs”. and he sometimes replaces yes or no with animal noises…oh, toddlers! they are entertaining, aren’t they?!
She has a small dinosaur that she named Matuda Matuda. It’s hilarious and sounds like she’s talking another language whenever she works him into the conversation…
xo
s
Aww, she’s such a cutie pie!
Very sweet but I think I faintly heard “gangnam” maybe she was trying to get her dollies to dance!
Haha, two others said that! It could be!
xo

My son, who is now 5, used to do the same exact thing. We called it gibberish as well. We would ask him, “What are you speaking, gibberish?” and he’d answer, “Yep, gibberish.” lol
So cute!

When my son went through the “gibberish phrase” we named his baby language “Babynese” kind of like baby chinese. :)
It’s a fun phase but what I love even more is when they use big words incorrectly or use the big word correctly with the wrong word for something else.
I apparently had a “secret language” as a kid that I used to talk to my dolls with. Given that I have a ton of siblings, I have no idea why I was so interested in making up my own language to talk to inanimate objects with, but there you go. I would often make up songs in the Secret Language, too, and sing them when I thought no one was watching.
Haha, that’s so cute Athena!

I LOVE how she sucks her thumb. My younger son (almost 2) sucks his and I can’t handle the cuteness. He’s such a wild man but always has to stop for a little suckāso funny. :)
I was thinking that too, that perhaps one of your international readers could tell if she’s been projected another language! My background is Swedish so I can tell you that’s not it. Although, it would’ve made sense. The exposure to Ikea and all… ;o)
Haha!
xo
s
She sounds to me like she’s saying the words to Gangnam Style! I know she loves her pop hits!
Other people have said that- that must be it!
xo

I could seriously listen to your kid all day, she is the sweetest thing ever! And so polite asking Daddy for the wipe! I love it! :)
Hey Sherry and John, my youngest niece used to do the same thing. She would even look at you and carry on a conversation with you. She would just chatter away while looking at you assuming you knew what she meant…….well one day I got the wild idea to chatter back at her. At first she just looked at me dumb-founded. Then all os the sudden she laughed and started her gibberish right back. We would sit gibber gabbering with each other for some time. Laughing…pointing at things…gabbering etc etc etc…….
So cute!
