Thirty Two & Some Barbies Too
So even though it’s only been two weeks since we (very belatedly) took Clara’s last month photo, we’re trying to get back on schedule by grabbing her 32 month photo before it’s a month late too (it was due on the 14th). And this time it features a few friends…

The photo shoot started off sans-Barbies/Princesses and mostly consisted of Clara being fascinated by all of the dots.

But before I could stop her, she has asked “Can I get a toy?” and brought over Rapunzel, Belle, Ariel, and Barbie to join the fun. She was quite proud of her entourage.

“No, Tyra says to smile with your eyes, ok? Don’t mess up my picture?” Just kidding, she didn’t say that, but it looks like an appropriate picture caption.

Then she paused and, pointing to Rapunzel, said “she has blonde hair like me!” and separated her blonde buddy to begin what might count as her first “clique” ever. I’m not sure why Barbie was excluded from the blonde girl club though. Too platinum?

Come to think of it, it’s a bit ironic that Clara dubbed the princess known for having insanely long locks as her “hair mate.” We can hope Clara, we can hope.

Eventually everyone was seated, and the whole crew was reunited. Clara even made her “I’m going to smile big!” face. She hasn’t quite mastered the real-looking-fake-smile thing yet.

And then it got sassy. It wouldn’t be a monthly photo shoot without at least one sassy outtake, now would it?

Atta girl.

I am so in love with this fabric! And Clara’s sass! :)
Adorable! And Rapunzel in the last two pictures looks like the drunken hot mess (legs wide open and hair all over the place), especially compared to the others!
This is my favorite comment in the history of all comments.
I second that this is the very best comment ever!
lol!!!
haha… that’s hilarious!!
Cute pics ~ she cracks me up!! Cute fabric too ~ pillows for Clara’s big girl room? Or curtains? hmmmm ;)
I thought this was a G-rated blog. You just made me choke! So funny! (And I am a grandma!)
Sooo cute. I just wanna kiss that sweet face!
I love how the monthly circle matches the fabric with the extra circle! Such a simple and smart detail!
I saw your recent post on instagram about Clara’s first ear infection and dr’s visit. Can I ask what you attribute to her being so healthy the past 32 months? Every other parent we know is taking their kids to the Dr it seems every other week for some sort of cold. Does she take kiddie vitamins? Do you quarantine her? Does she wear a Swine Flu mask when she goes out? Do tell.
I think we attribute it to a few things: luck (some kids are just more predisposed to have chronic ear infections, bronchitis, etc – and she doesn’t seem to be one of them), breastfeeding (I nursed her for 14 months, so anytime I was sick over those months she got antibodies through me, so that definitely helped build her immunity), exposing her to everyone and not keeping her in a bubble (I mean obviously if someone has the flu we don’t hang out with them but she has always played with all of her cousins and goes to preschool now and has lots of ways to get germs, which I also think is great since it further builds up her immunity). Hope it helps!

I think there is also something to be said for her diet. Perhaps it’s just smart photography on your part, but she seems to eat more fruit and veggies then the average 2 year old. If I remember correctly you once said she’ll eat kale and there are videos of her talking about how much she loves strawberries and …apples?
Oh yes, she loves kale and hummus and broccoli and even random things like edamame and lots of fruit!

Uhhh…any chance maybe Clara needs more Barbies? Because my parents just sent me four boxes of my childhood Barbie stuff and I don’t know what to do with it. I think there’s a car. And, um, an apartment? And probably an astronaut suit (with Dynasty-era puffy shoulders and a bikini bottom–cuz that’s like totally how people go into space).
My dad just texted that there’s one more box coming. #saveme
Hahahhaahah! I would totally craigslist that. Some local little girl will be in heaven!

Or me. I would love to have my giant tubs of barbie stuff back. My mom gave them away and now they are gone…gone forever. Sad.
I can’t believe how long Clara’s hair really is getting. It’s not Repunzel length but I bet she can pull off a pony tail now.
We have those barbies at work- when we got them in we called them our ‘fifties beach party pin up princesses’ because they all totally look like they could have come out of one of those fifties beach party musicals. p.s. she is getting more gorgeous by the day!
She is such a cutie! I love how she incorporated her barbies in this picture. Nice touch. :-D
She is too cute! My husband always quotes Tyra and tells me to “Smize” in photos. I haven’t mastered it yet. I think I’ll just start cheesing like Clara.
Love the sass!!
She is so beautiful! How tall is she now? She looks like she’s inherited Johns height!
She’s so tall! We haven’t measured her in a while, but maybe 32″? Can’t remember!

Look at how independent she is getting :) Bringing in her own props and everything! I love the sass
Haha! It took my nephews forever to master the real looking fake smile! It makes looking back at photos so funny.Love it!
Clara is so cute! This is the best idea…but not surprised you two came up with it…BTW, I’ll just join the “I LOVE YOUR BOOK” club. It’s so good!
Awww, thanks Megan! So glad to hear you’re enjoying it!

So cute. Reminds me of my son – he brings an armload of stuffed animals into our bed each morning! I didn’t notice any comments about it, but I love that fabric! Do you know who makes it?
It was something we picked up at JoAnn Fabrics, so sorry I don’t know the exact maker.
-John
Cool. We have Joann up here. I’ll keep my eyes peeled!
Hey Sherry!
Random question…how does Clara do with brushing her teeth? Our son Jack is decent but normally just sucks on the toothbrush and won’t let me “take my turn” to actually brush them. Any tips?
Thanks!
Melissa
I found Clara started to get better at going beyond just sucking when I brushed with her. So we each had one of her tiny toothbrushes and I’d brush mine, then I’d brush hers, then she’d brush mine, then she’d brush her own, etc, etc. She had fun getting to “brush daddy’s teeth” which got her into the habit of doing the brushing action on her own teeth.

I don’t know what it is about this post in particular, but MAN she’s starting to look like you guys. Both of you….which is so cool. (I just know that my light-haired blue-eyed genes are going to get steamrolled by my husband’s Filipino genes…dark hair, dark eyes, dark skin.) But Clara looks exactly like you’d think that a combination of the two of you would look!
Aw thanks Laura! That’s so sweet. When she was born she looked so much like John for so long I love hearing that I’m in there too finally :)

Clara is getting so big! Can you guys still get away with using 1 yard of fabric, or do you need to use more nowadays?
Oh no, we’ve been buying 2 yards of fabric ever since we started doing her monthly photos.
-John
She’s beautiful! And her hair is getting so long!
Ah, she’s so beautiful! Kudos to both of you for raising such a sweet and precocious child. And, I have to agree… she looks so much like her mom these days :).
Ok. Random aside: I’m looking for rugs, and stumbled upon this bumblebee rug. Maybe it’s a little kitschy, but I immediately thought of you guys:

Aww, it’s sweet!

My 4 year old’s hair hasn’t made it past her shoulders yet and she liked to exclaim, “MY HAIR IS LONG LIKE RAPUNZEL’S!!!”
I’m so jealous that your Disney Princesses have swimsuits :( Our princesses do not. Are your Mattel or Disney brand?
I believe they’re Mattel brand. We got them in what I think was the Barbie aisle…
-John
I can tell you’re a daddy and mommy who understand and appreciate childhood!
Good job!
The hair will come! My daughter was bald until two and now at 13 (yikes!) it is beautiful and thick and to the middle of her back! We think she’s the cutest and sooo smart! When can we get more Clara sayings? You guys are fun to follow and deserve all the great things that are coming your way!
Aw thanks Jen! I write her sayings down all the time and once I have enough for a post (five) I try to get them up right away :)

I love the circle around the “32″ on her shirt, made to match the fabric.
Little late on this, but where brand are Clara’s jeans? My 4 yr old daughter is a beanstalk and jeans are always too short and too baggy! Thanks! :)
Sorry-what brand are her jeans-I think I combined thoughts there a tad bit.
They’re from Old Navy (she’s tall so they’re a 3T). Hope it helps!
