Two And A Half
On my last day of being a 30 year old, Clara became a 30 month old. Yup, she’s officially halfway to 3! (Update: Ok, she’s really halfway to five, but it’s mind-blowing enough that she’s now closer to 3 than 2.)

Since we were traveling that week, we were a bit behind on getting her photo taken. But better late than never, right? And as usual, here are some of our favorite outtakes.

Not sure this is a pose I’ve ever seen before (nor would I recommend it ever again).

Now hands on hips – that’s a look I’m more familiar with.

The brown lump at her feet is a stuffed buffalo (bison?) that she alternately calls a buffalo, lion, or panda. We kept her entertained during this photo session by playing catch with it…

Mommy wasn’t always perfect with her throwing arm either.

Good thing Clara’s getting some practice already.

Oh yeah, and just a day after taking this photo we noticed that Sarah Richardson used the same fabric as gift wrap in this month’s HGTV Magazine. So you know what that means, right?

Sarah + Clara = BFFs by fabric association. And Mommy’s jealous.

What a cutie, as always. The tutu is so cute! I picked up that fabric a while back and have been searching for projects for it. So pretty!
That first outtake totally says Michael Jackson to me…”hooo-ooh!” Love it!
I was thinking the same thing!!!!
Clara is such a cutie! Love the dance(?) moves in the outtakes :) I can see more of Sherry in these pictures – especially the hands on the hips one.
Sarah
So cute!!! Can’t believe that she’s almost 3!!!
So cute! I love the buffalo-on-Clara’s-head photo (that expression is priceless!). And I couldn’t help but notice the size of Clara’s feet — she’s gonna be a big girl when she grows up :)
She’s like a puppy- she’s going to be big! Haha. The doc guessed 5’8″!
xo

My mom believes that if you double a kid’s height at two, that’s how tall they’ll be. I’m exactly twice my age two height… How tall was Clara at 2?
She was whatever half of 5’8″ is (that’s how the doc got the guess that she’s be 5’8″ – hah!). So proud that a 5’2″ lady like me might end up with a tall daughter. It’s amazing and I owe it all to tall John!
xo
s
I love that your doctor used the same method as my mother! PS LOVE your attitude about Clara being tall. I know so many women who hunch over & I’m convinced that parents, by being positive about how awesome being tall is, can really give their kids more confidence about their height!
Oh yeah, it’s like winning the lottery if you’re tall in my family. My mom is 4’11″ so even the fact that I’m 5’2″ is a miracle! Haha!
xo
s
She’s so tall!! My 3 1/2 yr old is shorter than her!
She got it all from her tall daddy. Short momma is so proud!
xo
s
So adorable! The first outtake pose totally looks like a move from Michael Jackson! :)
The “halfway to 3″ thing is confusing me….do you mean halfway to 5? On another note, I love that fabric and Clara is a doll!!
Halfway to 3 from 2! In other words, 2.5 years old!
xo
s
Ok, that makes sense!! I was seriously confused for, like, 10 minutes. :)
I got the whole halfway to three thing, and I’m guessing you don’t want to think about how 30 months is halfway to 5, right??? #theygrowuptoofast
We sell bison like that here at Maymont! They are sooo cute! Those pictures are super cute too!
Is that the buffalo (they call it bison in ND, but I don’t even care, it’s buffalo 4eva) Lori’s son gave you right before he almost shot a booger on you at your book signing in Mpls?!? Hilarious! We are so proud. ;) The buff made it on the nightmare train ride and everything just to see yhl!!! Ethne
Adorable! And goodness that child is huge! My nearly 6 year old is 42″, 42lbs and wears a size 10 shoe…and from these pictures Clara looks to be not too far off of those measurements. lol.
What’s the difference between a buffalo and a bison?
You can’t wash your hands in a buffalo.
Very cute pictures of Clara!
The scientific name for an American bison is Bison Bison. People commonly refer to them as buffalo (and like myself can be particularly opinionated about this) unless you are referring to water buffalo – which are not from North America – or went to North Dakota State University, whose mascot is the Bison. Bottom line, it’s the same animal.
Hah! Thanks!

Haha! I love that joke Jenny, it’s one of my favourites. :)
Go Bison! #proudNDSUalum
Love this! Go Buffaloes! #proudCUBoulderalum :)
omg! can we just talk about how much she looks EXACTLY like sherry in the family photo for the blog? CRAZY mommy’s girl these days!
I’ve been reading Young House Love for a while now and came across Clara’s monthly photos. Her cheerfulness is so infectious even if only through the photos. Love seeing her pics. She is obviously so loved and it’s nice to see a kid so happy.
Aw thanks Jan! She’s a lovable gal!

Um… random question. I’m desperate. When did you transition from two naps to one? How did you do this?
Day one is today of the big one nap experiment for my almost one year old… and I am going to go crazy. HELP ME.
Clara gradually started blowing off her 10am nap and started staying up until around noon and then crashing, so for a while we just did a noon nap and it seemed to work (sometimes we put her in her bed for a later nap at 4pm until around 5pm if her noon nap was really short, which was not usually successful but at least she had some quiet time). I don’t remember when this was, maybe when she was 2? Maybe 1.5? Then she started pushing it back again a lot more, so currently she only has one nap, usually around 2:30-4:30. It’s weird because she’s up for such a long stretch (from 8am-2:30pm) and then naps and only plays for another three hours or so before bedtime again, but it seems to work for her!

Fantastic! Thanks for the advice!
Oooh I love this fabric, and Sarah (#CanadianPride). What is it???
We found it on clearance at JoAnn Fabric. Hope it helps!

I am loving all the vogue that girl has going on!!!
She is adorable! and looks JUST like Sherry in the “hands-on-the-hips” picture. What a cutie!
Ok she is too cute but what size feet does she have? I have a 37 month old who still wears a 7! Clara’s look long and lean!!
Yeah… she’s going to be tall. She’s a 7/8 (depending on the brand) at 2.5 years old.
xo
s
Man! My ten year old daughter is a 7/8! She is vey concerned that she will be in a booster seat until she goes to college! Crazy to think that my ten year old and your 30 month old could share clothes!!!!
I can’t believe I ended up with a tall girl! Haha! It’s so crazy!
xo
s
Holly -
Her shoe size is a 7/8, not her clothing size. Clara does not wear the same clothing size as your 10-year-old. :)
Oh yes, and we just got her those furry boots from Old Navy and she’s a 9 there! Ahhhh! She’s growing like a weed!
xo
s
Is Clara a leftie??
Yup! She has been a clear leftie for a while (she’ll switch a spoon or a crayon to her left hand every time if you put it in her right one). My brilliant dad’s a leftie so I love it!
xo
s
I was going to ask the same thing. Go lefties!!
That girl just keeps getting cuter!
How tall is she? I think she’s taller than my son, who just turned 3 Friday. He’s always been a peanut, but I have a feeling he’ll shoot up at some point, which is what happened to me.
She’s super tall (don’t exactly measure her but she’s always in the top-ish percentile). She’s tall and skinny like her daddy…
xo
s
She’s starting to look so much more like you, Sherry! Especially with certain facial expressions. : )
So cute! I might have to try throwing stuff during photoshoots because right now neither the almost 2.5 year old or the 7 month old will stay in one spot!
Old wives’ tales in my homeland Brazil say that if you double the height a child has at exactly 2 years old, it will his/her height as an adult. Of course it is not scientific at all, but it seemed to have worked with me, my sister and cousins!
Clara amazes me because in one picture she looks a copy of Sherry, then the next one a copy of John. I can’t decide! What does your family and friends think? Still on the fence?
No way! By that method Clara will be 5’8″ exactly I think! We’ll have to see if it’s true! As for the family, they mostly think John but sometimes from the profile we see me more or when she smiles really big (I have a giant mouth, haha).
xo
s
These shots are all priceless! The 2nd one is cracking me up :) Clara is such cutie pie…even with a buffalo/lion/panda being ricocheted at her little head :)
I met Sarah years ago at our local home show…it was just before she hit it really big in the design world. I knew of her from her guest spots on another great Canadian tv show called Savoir Faire with Nik Manojlovich. Very nice gal…Clara will enjoy being her fabric-BFF :)
xox
No way, that’s awesome!
xo
s
In that second outtake, I assumed Clara was about to do that dance where you put your arm behind your head and hold your ankle with the other hand….very Vanilla Ice.
Hahahahah!
xo
s
I’m glad I’m not the only one that thought 30 months was half way to 60 months, which is 5 years old. Then after a few seconds I realized you were talking about just this year. Oh the joys of simple arithmetic.
Ps, don’t tell Sherry but Clara totally looks like you. Haha, my mom was always jealous of my dad because I looked more like him. Some kind of maternal instinct? Not sure.
It’s so funny because she looked just like John when she was born! Slowly I’m creeping in there as she gets hair! Haha!
xo
s
I can’t believe how much of Sherry I see in her in these pictures :) She’s too cute!
That fabric is so gorgeous! And it’s crazy how long Clara’s hair is getting! Happy two and a half, Clara!
Lu-hu-hu-hu-ve all the pics! Too cute for words.
Correction : it is “Mommy and HER throwing arm”. No worries.
Thanx for keeping us up to date with all that’s going on even while keeping your crazy schedule. You both are amazing!
Thanks for the typo tip! All fixed :)

So cute! My daughter has a stuffed buffalo, it was a gift from her aunt and uncle when we visited them in Montana in April. Gorgeous State! And she calls him Tonka, short for Tatonka. LOL She loves that thing. I think it is cute, most kids have stuffed bears or monkeys (she has a few of those too that she loves also) but I think it is so cute when she is walking around with her little buffalo.
V.
Hilarious – that second photo is totally the Michael Jackson pose. Just put a sparkly glove on one of those hands!
Does Clara like taking these photos? It seems like she’s really into it. If she likes it, do you ever think about letting her choose the fabric to get more involved? Seems like something she’d be into.
She seems to really like them because we wait until she’s in the mood (we might ask a few times and she’ll say “no I’m coloring” or “no I’m reading” and then she’ll say “yes! I want to take pictures” and we’ll jump at the change! Haha. As for her picking the fabric, she already has a lot of say about that! She comes with us to the store most times and we usually toss a bunch of options in the cart (the we think will photograph well, don’t cost too much, etc) and then let her pick her favorite! It’s lots of fun and the girl has great taste! Hahah!

The hair is growing! Bring on the bows!
Aww, Clara is looking more girly esp. in that first photo and the 2nd is just hilarious!
Love her expression in picture 1 and 7. I think she is a perfect mix of the both of you !
Her different facial expressions are awesome. I can see you and John in her. So precious.
Lol, she is SO cute! I love her sweet, happy faces. :-) And that was a great fabric choice!
Happy BD tomorrow, John! Happy 2.5 to Clara today!
I bet you could get two itty, bitty, teeny adorable pigtails in her hair. It’s getting long!
Oh man, that picture of her cracking up while the buffalo is on the ground is too much! It’s like she’s thinking, “I can’t even believe this! My arms are wide open and that silly buffalo missed them!”. And pictures 2 and 3 are like snort-out-loud kind of funny! Especially with you’re captions! What a fantastic family!
you guys got some great pictures this month. must have been hard to choose a favorite!
I bought that fabric for winter accent pillows and love it – but freaked out and love it even more now that I’ve seen in on your site!!! I called my friends to tell them all about how I had such good taste that you guys liked it too LOL!
Hahaha! That’s awesome!

Shes getting so big! I can’t wait to give her the lil” prezzy i got her! See ya’ll in austin!
Aw, you’re so sweet Annette!
xo
s
Aw look at her! She just keeps getting more and more beautiful! :)
Cool fabric. I’m a big Sarah fan too!
She just keeps getting cuter…freaking adorable!
Man, if people think she is big, my daughter must be a giant! She’s 20 months, 36 inches…size 8/9 shoes. Love the poses. The new pose cracked me up!
I must just be super emotional tonight but once I read the “update: halfway to 5″ sentence, the tears started flowing! Seriously?! When did this happen?! My youngest is about 5 months younger than Clara so we’ll be hitting that milestone sooner than I care to think! It’s been so fun to see our girls ‘grow up together’ and be at the same stages for the most part… They’d be friends in real life, I know it! My daughter loves to watch videos of Clara and is a #burgerfanforlife <3
