Dreidel
Since Hanukkah has started, we couldn’t resist sharing this America’s-Funniest-Home-Video-worthy clip of Clara tapping into the spirit of the holiday. In the video below she’s just playing with a wooden spinning top (actually made in India and given to us by a reader at one of our DC book signings) but having watched an episode of Calliou about Hanukkah she’s convinced that it’s a dreidel. At least she’s a little bit closer than when we caught her singing “Play-doh, play-doh, play-doh. I made you out of clay!” one afternoon.
Also be warned that this video is basically a night at the Petersiks in its rawest, most unglamorous form. Don’t worry, she was ok…
… and yes, that really is Sherry’s cell phone ring.

Oh no! The video isn’t showing up on my computer!! I can’t wait to see it!
Sorry it’s not popping up! Here’s a direct link if that helps: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=36OClpog7HA

I don’t think we’ve ever heard Clara cry before! I’m not going to lie, I chuckled a little bit when I heard her because I work with toddlers and it’s a constant struggle to stop them from wailing.
The funniest thing is that now Clara asks to watch “Clara fall down” and laughs maniacally at herself. It’s hilarious!

The idea of Clara watching herself fall down and then laughing is hilarious to imagine! Any chance we can get a video of her watching herself/reacting?
I seriously need to make one. It cracks her up every time!

O.M.G. When I saw Clara fall, I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. My boys fall all the time. At least she bounced back and was singing again!
i am probably the worst parent/person ever, but I started crying laughing at Clara’s fall. I think if you hadn’t put the disclaimer above that she was okay it wouldn’t have been as funny.
I also love how she waited for the “dreidel” to fall
before she started her song. She is too funny, and it’s so fun to see her just being a crazy fun two year old :)
OMG, me too…so glad I’m not the only one! (And yes, the disclaimer made me feel a little less like an awful human being for that.)
Guys, I love this- reminds me of my daughter, even though she tends to get stuck in a loop when singing… You might want to double-check the title of the video though :) Especially when I know how OCD Sherry is about typos >_<
Thanks Christa!

Fabulous ringtone! :) I set mine to Call Me Maybe awhile back but I had to change it because teenage girls were giving me weird looks whenever it went off. Haha!
Hahahah! Nobody gets the irony!

The mommy in me does the eye squint, clenched teeth and quick air inhale sound the second she falls (despite how many times I see the video). :-)
She is such a cutie…I love that she ‘sings’ the dreidel song. :-D
I’m sorry, I have to admit that I can’t stop laughing at poor Clara falling down! Little ones are constantly tripping and falling, without injury, and it cracks me up every time. I’m glad Clara is okay and was able to continue singing for us :)
Love it! We celebrate Hanukkah and Christmas in my house so it’s a whirlwind of dreidels, latkes, lights, and gifts! This year my older son is in Sunday school and actually understands what’s ON the dreidel–so cool! Glad Clara is ok :-)
HA! The mom in me freaked out a little when Clara fell, but then it was kind of funny… :-) She cracks me up! Though I wish we could have heard her “play-doh” song!
I feel like this video is a trick to get me to have children. She is so funny!
Awwwwww that poor baby! And I am with Katie up there….maybe you guys are the cause of the new baby boom and it is not Christian Gray after all!!!!
Haha, I don’t think so!

HHaahahahahAHAHH I’m sorry but I’ve rewatched that beginning like 10 times. Hhaahahaha. Amazing.
I’m glad I’m not the only one!! I watch all of Clara’s videos but this one is one of my favorites. I felt a bit bad laughing at her, though, but I couldn’t help it!
I wasn’t sure she was going to cry at first. You can hear her “ooo” when she hits the floor and I thought for a sec she was going to shake it off. But nothing was going to stop her from singing the song! Love her plaid top.
So sorry for laughing at your kid :)
For some reason when she started singing the song all I could think of was Barney’s version from How I Met Your Mother. Lol. Clara is adorable and thank you for letting us know she was ok when she fell. Love your ringtone Sherry! I agree, best way to end the video.
For me, the funniest part was when she arbitrarily threw the pillow on the floor. Like, she looked at it and decided she REALLY did not want it on the chair. Haha!
YES! That was so random and hilarious!
I watched this video with my 15-month-old and after it was over she immediately signed, “more!” so we watched your gradient Christmas tree video, too. I love how at the end of that video Burger comes running over the minute he hears you say “bacon.” Also I’m glad Clara was OK after wiping out on Take 1. It is nice to know that, like all other toddlers, she occasionally falls down and cries, too. But she is completely enchanting and my daughter and I both love her videos!
Hilarious! Hope it was a quick turnaround from the tears to playing again!
Kids are the best comedic relief – mine just turned 2 on the weekend and falls constantly. I’m that terrible parent who just laughs at them.
Pahahahaha, I love your ringtone, Sherry. I need to find a song for my ringtone like that – instant confidence booster whenever your phone rings :)
I love the stream of consciousness.
Dreidel, egg chair, dreidel, “it’s dark outside.”
Dunno why but my favorite part is when she tosses the little pillow off the egg chair… something about the way she does it cracks me up! :)
Too cute. Her little “oof” followed by an earth-shattering scream. Priceless. Glad she bounced back.
So glad Clara is okay and was able to carry on with her performance! She’s got so much energy and these videos of her singing and talking are always such fun. Thanks for sharing them.
And Sherry that is the best ringtone ever – I really want it now!
totally made my day!
That ringtone! I work in a grocery store and just last night a customer behind me yells “I work out!” LMFAO, literally.
Hahahahah!

America’s funniest home video candidate?
Perhaps. I could watch it over and over. <3
Wiggle-wiggle-wiggle! LOL, thanks for sharing!
Awww, bless her little heart! I’ll admit I watched the fall a few times – the complete spread out plus the little gasp before the shriek – priceless!

She’s already arranging pillows and checking out chair orientations. You’ll have to start a sister site where Clara gives her own interpretations on design. :)
Hahaha! It’s true!

Younger House Love: the sequel blog by Clara! Oooh I can’t wait until she can type and maybe do her own posts!
Hahahah!

Thank you so much for the disclaimer the Clara was okay. Otherwise I would have felt awful for laughing hysterically. She’s so dang cute though and I totally commend the both of you for this tidbit of raw Petersik night life :)
Sherry and John, I apologize for the irrelevant post but when I learned of this situation I knew I had to immediately go to someone who could reach a lot of people, and fast.
I know you guys are in VA but have many fans in my state of NC, as well. Harnett County Animal Control is adopting out animals for just $25; any animal who is not adopted by 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday (12/11) will be euthanized the next day.
I know that you guys are animal lovers – it’s obvious by the way you treat Burger – so please, from the bottom of my heart, could you make a quick post alerting people to this? I’m aware that this happens every week in various shelters across the US, but when I saw the pictures of these animals and how few there are left to adopt I made it my mission to ask friends, family, and you guys to try and save these innocent angels. They deserve to live – my boyfriend and I are going to wait until later in the day in hopes that almost all of them will be adopted. That way we can adopt the last few.
I know this is odd and I feel so terrible to ask this of you, but if I had the influence you guys have to reach people I would be ecstatic. Here is the website: http://harnettanimalcontrol.com/category/animal-adoption-listings/
Fortunately as I am looking at it right now, there are only 5 cats and 10 dogs that are left. I realize you guys are terribly busy – but please take this opportunity to use your fame for good in such a simple way – even getting your blogger friends to post about this too could have a tremendous impact! If people know you support this they will go through many lengths to do the same. I myself will be driving an hour with my boyfriend even though we both have finals the next morning. This would truly mean the world to me.
At the very least, please just let me know you saw this.
Thanks so much for spreading the word about such an important cause! We love to “share the mic” on our Facebook page, so please feel free to post about it over there (we have 55,000+ folks over there to hopefully spread the word!). We’d love for all of those pets to find a loving home!

I laughed out loud when Clara fell down, which I feel bad about haha, but my 2 year old daughter does that exact same thing at least 5 times a day and it just becomes comical after awhile! And since I always say, “are you okay?’ after she falls she has started saying immediately after a fall, “I’m ok mommy, yeah I’m ok”. Gotta love toddlers…she makes me laugh every day :)
P.S. I love how Sherry answers the phone, “this is Sherry” :) That made me chuckle too :)
It’s such a weird habit I developed as a freelancer. If I know who it is I just say “hello!” though! Haha.
xo
s
I do the same thing, but since I don’t like the rhyming of “This is Chris,” I answer, “Chris speaking.”
So funny!

I can’t believe Clara cried! For so long there I thought you guys had the world’s greatest kid that never cried =) I especially like how she said oh before starting to cry. Such a cutie!!
Oh how I wish that were true… but she’s definitely a normal kid who whines, fusses and cries!
-John
Wow. There are no words to describe the ridiculousness of that face plant, the hilarity of “play-doh play-doh play-doh,” or how much I love Sherry’s ringtone.
I felt a bit bad for laughing when Clara falls but I’m glad to see I wasn’t the only one! Glad you let us know beforehand that she’s okay! haha :)
It’s not nice to laugh at little kids falling down. But I did it anyway. Sorry Clara!
Ha ha ha! I laughed so hard when she fell. Not because I’m heartless but because I have a 2 yr old who wipes out similarly. She is so funny!
What’s really amazing is that you don’t need to interpret what Clara says at all now – she’s very clear and easy to understand. There’s such a difference compared to back when she was tiny.
Clara is so cute!! These videos always make my day. :)
Quick question: what sound effect do you use for the beeps (like the ones in between takes)? I tried looking in iMovie for one and can’t find one that gives that same effect. Help!
I googled around for a sound effect and found it somewhere for free. So sorry I don’t remember the source! Maybe just try searching for “blooper reel beep” which is what it’s called in iMovie now that I downloaded it.
-John
Hah! Love the ringtone. Fun fact about that song- whenever I’d listen to that song when I was pregnant, my daughter would start rolling all over and my belly would jump up and down. Now, she just bobs her head to the song (she’s outside the belly now, in case I didn’t make that clear). It’s the most hilarious song ever to begin with, but her love for it cracks me up.
PS. I love that Clara just bounces back into dancing wildly even after a fall. That kid has energy!
That’s so funny! It’s her song!

I’m glad Clara’s OK, but how could no one point out the sympathy for you guys having to watch Calliou!
My 2 year old little girl LOVES Calliou, so we have to watch it all the time by request (over and over). Can’t say it’s one of my favorites ;)
Hahaha, she loves it!! My goodness, it’s an obsession.

I hate saying this, but I laughed out loud (while at work) when the bean fell! Kids are just too stinkin’ cute when they are dramatic! And Sherry’s ringtone is priceless!
Oh man, I didn’t read the disclaimer before pressing play and my heart stopped when Clara fell. Phew! Glad she was OK. I think it’s hilarious that Clara does more spinning than the dreidel!
Love it!! was cracking up over here cos it reminds me of that episode of Friend’s where Ross try’s to teach Ben about Hannukah and dresses up as the ‘holiday armidillo’…
I can watch it over and over and it cracks me up every time :)
Oh man, I love that one.
-John
It’s the Holiday Armadillo! Man, I love Friends!!
it sounds like she hit the floor so hard! But now that I know she’s okay I feel like it’s safe to rewatch and chuckle a little.

With Luck
Nuts, now I have Strait No Chaser’s “12 Days of Christmas” in my head.
Oh gosh, so funny. I have a little girl a smidge younger than Clara and I always try to laugh off the falls… if they keep crying, that’s when you know it’s more serious. :) Obviously, this was not as she didn’t lose much momentum it seems in her song and dance! :D
Got a good kick out of Sherry’s ring tone too.
The humor in seeing a kid have a minor boo boo from life just makes me giggle sometimes. I took a video of my niece going down the firepole at the playground… and um, she kinda let go. Needless to say, didn’t end well, but good gosh, it was a little funny to watch again before I deleted it from guilt. :)
And, I have a video fo my daughter getting a lil nip by a bird at the zoo when she said “BIRDIE!!!!!” and her finger was too close for comfort to the bird. She pulled her hand back in horror. Her face. Hilarious.
I love how Clara just pushes the small pillow to the floor. So funny! My kids do that all the time. It’s a losing battle…my husband often wonders (out loud) why I still try to fight it!
