Anniversary Outtakes
Today on Young House Love we’re sharing how we celebrated our 5th wedding anniversary, including the traditional taking of a family photo. As you may have seen in that post, this was the winning shot.

But to get one winner, there must be plenty of losers. So we’ve plucked out a bunch that didn’t make the cut. But first, here’s the general set up of how we got the shot. We picked the sunniest spot in our house (next to the big window in our living room, the same place where we take Clara’s monthly photos) because it was too hot to go outside like in previous years. I set up the tripod, broke out my camera remote and away we shot. We knew we’d be cropping in, so the remote wasn’t an issue… until Clara wanted to “push the button, Daddy!”

It actually made for a few cute shots.

And with my hand free, I thought I’d try (like in previous years) to give our anniversary digits a shout out (a five-fingered one this time around).

Well, then Clara wanted in on the action. So the remote came back my way and both of her hands flew out (along with her tongue, on occasion).

Maybe we’ll just have to save these photos for our 10-year anniversary. You know, when we’ll probably be itching to look five years younger.

We did sometimes wrangle one arm so that Clara was displaying the correct number of digits. But too often it ended up blocking other important parts of the picture. Like Sherry’s face.

This one turned out sorta cute. If only Clara didn’t look so spooked by her parents’ kisses.

And yes, we did bring Burger into the mix for a few shots even though putting him in range of Clara’s curious fingers can sometimes be a recipe for disaster. Though in this case it appears the poor guy is just bored.

I think this shot is where Sherry used her get-Clara-to-smile technique (hugging and bouncing) on Burger. It came out looking more like strangulation. Oh yeah, and Miss Crazy Hands is back. At least I held it together!

Overall the little family photo session went remarkably well. We avoided the heat that’s made previous years’ uncomfortable, plus Clara’s more interactive and better at taking direction than before (remember when she slept through her first anniversary photo two years ago?). Who knows, maybe next year we’ll successfully get six fingers held up to the camera? Perhaps even a Burger smile? A guy can hope, right?

Eel! Clara couldn’t be any cuter if she tried!
Love the pics! But I’m curious about one thing…Sherry’s hair is ALWAYS pulled back! It looks like she has a lot of beautiful hair, so what gives? Just not a fan of wearing it down? Would love to see it down and doing it’s thing!
I just like it off my face. I guess it’s like my black shirt problem. Haha. I’m a girl of habit. I blame too many years living in NYC. I’m set in my ponytail-with-a-black-shirt ways. Haha.

my family/friends always “complain” about me constantly wearing my hair up. i get irked by it on my neck and face too! even after spending an hour drying and styling it (which maybe happens once a month), i always end up putting it up less than an hour later!
Amen! I wear it down for long car rides sometimes, just so I’m not leaning back on a ponytail the whole time, but that’s it!

Haha. I do the exact same thing. Black, black, black, ponytail, bun, ponytail. And a few flowey dresses that everyone loves but really are just amazing because uhmmm can you say built in bra? They are really just cleverly designed mu mu’s lol.
Hhhahaha, sounds comfy!

Cute family photos! It looks like you have a death grip on Clara’s arm, Sherry, but her face definitely suggests otherwise. She looks so giggly & playful :)
Haha- seriously! Look at that grab! Haha.

Oh Clara! Too cute! Love her!
Such cute pics! You are all so dang photogenic!
Super cute outtakes and I love the one you all ended up on :) But, I may need to teach you all how to do a head swap is photoshop, would make getting a family picture a lot easier :)
<3
Okay…honestly…your family is too dang cute! I love the second to last one where Burger looks a little rabid and about to attack!
Hey. Cute picture guys! I have a random question for the rug experts (I’ve read your rug post from the kitchen about 5 times looking for different places that sell rugs). ;) I have been searching for a rug for our master bedroom (I need at least a 6×9) and am having trouble. I’ve looked at Ross, TJ Maxx, Marshalls, HomeGoods, Ikea, Pottery Barn, Crate & Barrel, The Company Store…you name it. I’ve even been desperate enough to try Craigslist (yeah, no luck there). I bought a flat woven rug for our kitchen and like it, so I’m not opposed to that at all (plus, they’re easier on the wallet). We are on a budget…trying not to exceed $300.00 max. Do you guys have any suggestions on other places to look? Our master bedroom is Smoked Oyster by Valspar & we have white bedding/curtains with golden (yellowish) and navy blue accents. Any HELP or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! :) Thanks guys!
Hmm, what about overstock and wayfair.com? Jossandmain.com also has sales sometimes. Hope it helps!

Try Urban Outfitters! May be a little too funky for your style (and I’m not sure if they have rugs in the exact size you need), but they have a great, affordable selection!!

Pre-ordered your book last week…something I’ve been meaning to do for a while now! Been busy having a baby:) Little Charlie is already a fan!
Hooray!
Aw thanks Jenny! And hi to Charlie! Love that name.

These are great, I love the outakes and Clara is so photogenic…I guess all the monthly picture updates that she takes has gotten her prepped :) Very cute. Happy Anniversary!
I’m not sure if it’s on my end or not, but when I try to read your posts on the younghouselove.com site, It only shows the first part of the post and won’t let me scroll down to read the rest of it (hence the reason I have to comment over here since I can’t get to the comment part of the post over there). Your blog is the only one doing it for me, so I just thought I’d let you know. I am reading it through Google Chrome and it doesn’t matter how I get to the sight, it still does it.
Anyways, maybe it’s just me or maybe others are having this problem too!
Weird! Maybe it’s a glitch with your browser and our blog? it’s the first we’ve heard of that. Maybe try using Firefox or Explorer and hopefully Chrome will fix things? We haven’t changed anything on our end, so here’s hoping it fixes itself soon!

Love the photos! Sherry looks especially beautiful!
AWWW! There’s not a bad shot in the bunch! They’re ALL gorgeous with different expressions & poses :)
When mummy’s not holding her arms hostage, love how Clara goes all “JAZZ HANDS”! (6th photo down :) Sooo dang cute :)
What a beautiful family…thank you for over-sharing, as always :)
xox
Aww I love the one that you guys decided to frame. I can practically hear Clara’s little giggle.
These are all so cute! you guys should combine some into a photo strip since it looks like you weren’t able to make it to a photobooth this year.
Aw, that’s a fun idea!

Oh goodness, those are hilarious. My favorites are the ones where Clara is in control of the remote. Makes it look fun and spontaneous!
Love all of the pictures, they would look great in a little sequence for the family yearbook this year! Btw, what kind of camera do you use? :) I have a 3wk old beautiful baby girl that I’m dying to get some good photos of! I really want to do the weekly photo like you did for Clara, Even though I missed the first two due to new baby crazyness around here! :) we’ll see if I can stick to it! :)
We have a Nikon D3000 that we saved our pennies for before she was born. It takes a while to get used to it, but we’re so glad to have it!

Aww, they all look amazing! You should see our outtakes…. Or maybe it’s better that you don’t. I’m talking flaring nostrils, wonky eyes, eating hair… It’s not for the faint of heart. I love the third one down–Y’all look so sweet! Happy 5th Anniversary, guys! We’re celebrating our 10th this Friday! Don’t you just love love??? ;D
Aw thanks Tracey! Happy 10th this Friday!

It almost looks like Burger is going to eat the remote in the one picture! He might have been getting hungry for a snack! These are great pictures and will be so much fun to look back on! :-)
have you tried the free PhotoBooth app? It’s fun to use, I always end up with crazy photo strips that my girls made when I didn’t know they stole my iTouch!
Sounds like so much fun!

Sherry you look SO gorgeous in these pics!!
Aw thanks!

If you scroll through these kind of quickly, it’s like an adorable family flip book! (You can add that to the future project list! ;)
I actually like the 2nd and 3rd photos the best (the ones with Clara holding the remote). You all look happy and relaxed. I had to laugh at the one you chose– looks like Sherry has a death grip on Clara’s arm! I totally understand that move though as the mom of a one year old- good luck getting them to stay still!
Oh yes, my mitt is firmly grasping her arm in that shot!

cute cute pics :)
adorable & hysterical! Yes, save the 10 one for your tenth! Congratulations & happy anniversary!
Aw I love the one where John is showing a five and Clara is pressing the remote (while getting a smooch). It shows who is the boss now ;)
Sherry, you look so beautiful in these pictures! I love that death grip in the winning picture though ;)
Haha, I’m totally grabbing her arm. Thank goodness she’s laughing and not crying! I have no memory of that. Haha.

Do you mind sharing what remote you use for your nikon? I have the same camera and just tried to research remotes but there’s like a million options out there at a million different prices!! Thanks J&S, sorry to bug you guys with such silly questions! Love love the new anni pic :)
I got it for John on amazon. I think if you search camera remote that post will come up on Young House Love with the link to it for ya!

Absolutely stunning fotos………….what a lovely family <3<3
Great choice; that picture is so stinkin adorable. However, I am loving Burger’s face in the last pic. He is clearly uncomfortable, yet resigned to all the photo-taking shenanigans.
Love these pictures! You guys are so photogenic!
I love her little spirit fingers! You guys take a great family photo. We tried to take one on our first anniversary in June… but I forgot my camera and it’s not so easy to use a timer on a camera phone! Glad you had a great anniversary! (FYI, I was the one who sent you the prints in the mail- I realized after the fact I didn’t put my card in there or info and I probably looked like a crazy stalker!)
You’re so sweet Whitney! You should be getting our letter back to you any day now!

these photos are too adorable seriously!!
Clara has JAZZ HANDS!
Super cute! Weird question. What do you do with all the pictures you take? Do you get everyone printed out or do you have an external hard drive? I’m having a hard time with just making photo books or actually having physical pictures to hold. Thanks!
We make a family “yearbook” at the end of each year, which is basically a photobook of all of our favorite pictures from the year. We use iPhoto to organize all of our photos so I basically throw them all into one big “2012″ folder (they call the events, though) and then sort at the end of the year. And I periodically back it up to an external hard drive just to be safe.

Such a gorgeous little family (:
I saw this on Facebook and thought of Clara, little jelly worms made from drinking straws

Burger’s yawn reminds me that I read somewhere that when dogs yawn, it relieves stress for them. I then began noticing that every time my son was on stage or in the spotlight in some way there was at least one big, rather exaggerated yawn. Being a shy little guy, I decided it was relieving stress for him as well. Your little family always brings a smile to my face. Thanks for sharing your lives with us.
Interesting! I totally see how yawning can relax you and relieve stress.

Toooo cute! You guys gotta turn these into a GIF or something. :)
awww- I love the second one that is more closeup where Clara is doing the remote! Absolutely adorable! Should add it to your gallery wall! :)
I use this blog constantly and love it all. But most of all I love that you have a Clara too. We have to redo our Clara’s stripes in her nursery because we moved but this time it will probably just look even better, right? Next project is painting my $100 eBay table 1940s green, so thanks for the info on that as well! We also lengthened C’s draperies with the ultra bond per your suggestion. Thanks again!!
Aw thanks Alison! Your Clara sounds adorable.

I actually love #2 and #3 better than #1. Clara is such a little character. You all are so photogenic! Beautiful family. Happy anniversary!
