An Atlanta Animal Adventure
In our brief recap of our Atlanta trip on Young House Love on Wednesday, you probably got a pretty good taste of all of the adventures we had with the Bowers – like playing in their backyard, venturing out to some local attractions, and even taking a dip splash in nearby pool.

But if you’re the type that won’t settle for just a taste (like me around Chewy Chips Ahoy), here’s the next course in the photo-filled feast: Our trip to the Altlanta Zoo (or as they named it in some effort to throw off my natural word order instincts: Zoo Atlanta). Oh and there are some pretty awesome photos over on Katie’s blog too. But here are our (not nearly as professional) pics of that fateful and animal-filled day.

Some of these pics are repeats of what was shared in the earlier post, but we just couldn’t help ourselves from including them in the official zoo post. This is Sherry’s favorite of all time.

But here are also some new ones to introduce to the mix – like Will getting in on the “let’s defy the ‘No Climbing On Statute’ action.”

In fairness to Will and Clara, they actually kept off most of the statue (minus the gorilla’s feet).
Probably because their earlier climb-on-statue-together attempt ended a bit territorially… and this somewhat awkward photo is all we got.

They did cooperate when it came time to jump in the giant Eagle’s nest together, but of all the snapshots we got – this one of Clara flying the coop was the cutest.

The zoo itself was very cool (though definitely not temperature-wise) and there were lots of ways for the kids to interact and play (as you’ve probably gathered by now). In a few instances, the animals made themselves scarce (probably because it was such a hot day) but I actually think the kids enjoyed the peripheral activities more than the main attractions. Activities like “pushing the stroller I’m supposed to be in.”

And “running away from the stroller Daddy’s trying to get me back into.”

Clara did periodically make it into her stroller and we periodically did see some animals. Though if you asked me what we were looking at when this picture was taken, I couldn’t say. Monkeys maybe?

Probably the biggest hit of the day (category: animal) were the goats in the petting zoo – which hilariously (at least to me) was donated by Orkin. Something about seeing the logo of a famous extermination brand next to a petting zoo made me expect to see creatures far less furry and friendly inside.

Clearly the visit put a smile on Clara’s face. It also put one on the face of this dentally-challenged goat as well.

The tie for biggest hit (category: non-animal) were the rides. The Children’s Zoo had a moon bounce, a climbing station, a playground, a train, and a carousel – almost like a mini amusement park right on zoo grounds. The kids were nearing nap-time so we squeezed in just the train and carousel.

Clara made her tiger-loving dad proud (in my childhood I had a big thing for big cats… ok, and regularly sized cats too).

The zoo was only one half of our Atlanta animal adventure, but we’ll save all the photos from our trip to the aquarium for another post. Why? Because I haven’t sorted them yet. Haha. Soon I hope!

I love Clara’s HUGE grin in that first picture with the goat! I’m so glad you guys had a good time. I live about 30 minutes from the Zoo so I’m happy you came through ATL! Keeping my fingers crossed that Atlanta will be a book-tour stop in the fall!
Love the gorilla pics! So cute!
I LOVE Clara’s skirt in the zoo pictures! I wish I had one in my size!!
I agree about Clara’s skirt. Where’d you get it? If I can’t have one for myself, maybe my 2 year old can…
That was on clearance from The Gap (kids)!

Clara is so photogenic. Love the goat pic!
My cousin and I took her daughter (11 months old) to a smaller zoo by me a couple weeks ago and she WAS NOT having her stroller. So I carried her the whole time and my cousin (4 months pregnant with another) pushed the stroller. We did force the little one into the stroller up the big hill so I could take over both pushing and baby manuevering duties.
Goats are just the best animals for petting zoos! They’re big enough to be unusual, and often placid enough for kids to touch…
Love that Clara enjoyed her tiger ride. Roar!
Next time you come to Atlanta, you need to go to the Yellow River Game Ranch. It’s right next to Stone Mountain, and my boys love it. They have all kinds of animals- from deer and donkeys to bears and bobcats! You can feed most of the animals and you can pet pretty much everything that won’t maul you- including the deer! You can buy food for the animals and the most reasonably-priced souvenirs I’ve seen at the gift shop. It totally lives up to it’s motto, “Like a zoo, only better!”
*its. Sorry, I can’t leave a glaring grammatical error. Y’all need an edit function!
Oh yes, Katie B mentioned that we should do that next time! Fun!

Looks like John got a souvenir shirt on the trip as well. I love your taste in t-shirts.
He actually got that from Target here in Richmond, but I know he wishes it came from the Coke building across from the aquarium!

Clara looks SO HAPPY in that last picture. SO HAPPY.
Totally want to go to the Zoo Atlanta. Looks like so much fun!
I LOVE the zoo. We have a Richmond Zoo membership and love feeding the giraffes there. The Atlanta Zoo looks awesome!
I love seeing this side of things! Don’t get me wrong, I love the ‘house’ too. But, seeing Will and Clara together and you guys with the Bowers just makes everything more real. Thank you for being over-sharers. :)
P.S. Are you going to put the picture of Clara and the gorilla in your hallway or another special place in the house?
Yes, I totally want to! I just love it so much.

Always seems so wrong to me that the butterfly show here in Cincinnati is sponsored by Scherzinger Pest Control!
oh boy the goat pics are so so cute!!!
The first picture of Clara with the goat is completely adorable.
Also, she is like one million times braver than me. That goat sort of looks like it’s hungry for fingers.
Although I might just think that because of the one time that a goat (not at a petting zoo) tried to eat one of my fingers.
Just a “curious” question (and because you are both such good planners!): How will Clara pics/facts be handled when she’s “cognizant” of the blog. When she’s old enough to read, do you want her reading 200 comments about “she’s so cute”, etc… Or if she says “no pics or videos” will you comply?
Oh yes, she’s the boss. Even now if she’s not in the mood for a pic, we don’t take one. She wears the pants around here. Haha. So if she gets older and asks not to be blogged about, we’ll definitely respect her wishes!

I love Clara’s smile in the last picture, too precious! Every once in awhile you post a picture of Clara that reminds me so much of my nephew at that age.
Love the goat pics with Clara! I have a dairy goat farm (about 40 goats right now, 24 of which are babies) so I know how sweet goats can be.
