Richmond’s Getting Street Cred
We love Richmond. Have we said that lately? We could give you lots of reasons why, but for now we’ll focus on the love-able things we enjoyed a couple of weekends ago (the same weekend we hit up the Spring Bada-Bing craft show). It all started when we heard Richmond was having its first ever RVA Street Art Festival.
We’ve got an area downtown called the Canal Walk that follows the historic canals beside the James River. There’s a small section with an old powerplant that’s basically just a bunch of empty brick walls. At least it was empty. A bunch of Richmond artists got together to throw a festival where they painted huge murals on the walls while the public watched.

It was really awesome – in the truest sense of the word – to watch. Though with the somewhat narrow pathway and a big jogging stroller at odds, we didn’t get to linger too long in any one spot, but there were some craft vendors on the opposite site in case you wanted to bring some art home with you. You may remember this first vendor from the Handmade Holiday craft show we shared in December. Love those resin antlers he makes.
We also thought this spin on the usual “please do not touch” sign was pretty cute on this table full of knitted creations.

The festival didn’t take up a lot of space, so we decided to turn our visit into a longer walk along the Canal Walk. It was a gorgeous day and Clara’s stroller was already well stocked with distractions, so why not.

The walk goes right alongside some of the prettiest, urban parts of the river. Did you know we’ve got class IV rapids that people raft and kayak through right within the city limits? Well now you do. There are also lots of calmer parts of the river for swimming and tubing. We always say that instead of a beach town, Richmond is a river town, since everyone gravitates to the river from spring through fall.

Once the walk leaves the canal’s side, you follow an elevated train trestle for a bit – which we noticed is now sporting it’s own little piece of street art. Is it weird that we actually kinda love that little neon fish? The uneven wood. The green splatters. The fact that it’s just plastered up on the side of a concrete footing by some thoughtful artist for everyone to enjoy.

Then you can cross over the river to an island called Belle Isle that’s only open to foot (and bicycle) traffic. It’s got this cool walking bridge that’s suspended from a highway above it.

Belle Isle is one of our favorite places in Richmond. It was close enough to my former workplace that I could go on lunchtime runs here. It’s got an awesome gravel path looping the island with views of rocks, rapids, and the city. Some of the rocks are big enough that people even go out on them to picnic or sunbathe (and then take a dip in the river if they get hot).

They also work for a quick family photo session.

So yeah, in summary – we’re pretty happy to call this place home.

You might have to stare at that for a while, but it actually says Richmond. Cool, huh?

I’m so jealous of that river! (and that weather, it’s still pretty cold here).
Ya’lls blog has always made me want to move to Richmond (it’s only about 2-3 hours north of where I am now) but this one has really done it. I love visiting my family up there but I’ve never gotten to really go downtown, so this is on my to do list the next time I visit.
I’m right there with you! I’m about 3 hours north and every time I read about all the fun sights I feel compelled to take a day trip down there. Maybe one day!
Who knew Richmond was so cool? We might have to check it out one of these days.
OMG. That bridge scares the begeesus out of me. My dad runs on it all the time and over on Belle Isle! Crazy! And he’s scared of heights too! I remember walking across it with him, thinking that this had to be some sort of torture… and the thought of walking BACK over it shocked me when we got to the island and he told me there was no other way back… lol no other words than terrified come to mind!
Glad you guys love Richmond so much :) I loved growing up in Midlo and hope my family of 3 (almost 4!) will venture our way back there… too bad our wonderful jobs have us in Maryland for now. :(
that superstar in the white tshirt in the 3rd photo is my coworker, todd. he’s awesome. hi todd!
Haha, hi Todd!

Wow. What a beautiful area! I have been pining to go back to VA for a visit, we went to Williamsburg many years ago, and I think Richmond needs to be the vacation destination. Love it!
On a side note, Sherry has the most beautiful skin. lol Quite random, I know, but that last picture just shows how nice her skin is. Beauty tips welcome, $herdog. :)
Aw, you’re so sweet! My tips is organic stuff! It’s not expensive, I get everything at Target! I just have sensitive skin, so Organic Wear mascara and bronzer and mild Dr. Bronner’s soap seem to work better than the stronger stuff!

Sherry does have gorgeous skin!
Here’s another beauty tip: Use a soft cotton ball with olive oil on it to take off eyemakeup without scrubbing. Scrubbing damaged eyelashes and the delicate skin around your eye. Olive oil takes it all off and moisturizes the skin around your eye with super nutritiousness.
Love that!

Awe, the amigurumi (crochet dolls) are so cute! I like “please touch.” (that sounds pervy, you know what I mean). The weather looks so great! Jealous – we actually had snow this morning :-(
This post reminds me of a video where a guy spray paints a wall and that’s how he proposes to his girlfriend. It’s amazing! I loved it so much that I posted about it last June (you can see it here)!
SO cute!!

So many places I want to visit next time I’m in the Richmond area!
(Also just fyi under the picture of the knitted animals with the please touch sign you have a typo, you say Clara’s strolled instead of Clara’s stroller – just wanted you to know.)
Love all the pictures of Clara – she’s getting so big!
Thanks for the typo tip Anika! Off to fix it!

This would be a hike for you guys, but you should checkout ArtPrize in Grand Rapids, MI! It’s the largest art competition in the world, and the public gets to vote on the winners! It’s amazing! One of the best parts about it is that a lot of the pieces stay (paintings, murals, sculptures, etc) so after the passed 3 years the city is filled with awesome outdoor art!
Wow, that sounds amazing. We’d love to check it out!

Cool piece of trivia–that foot bridge under the Lee Bridge is the longest suspended foot bridge in the world.
No way- never knew that!

Oh, and at the Kanawha Canal there is a point where 3 modes of transportation intersect (canel, train tressel, and the Downtown Expressway)–4 if you count air travel. That’s the only spot where that happens also.
Oh yes, I love that trivia!

As a native Richmonder, I love when our city gets some love and attention! :) Belle Isle and Maymont are two of my favorite places in the city (and I’m lucky enough to live within walking distance of Maymont). The city has so many great green spaces for an urban environment.
Yay RVA!
We love Maymont! Just went there over Easter with all the kiddos (neices and nephews) to check out the animals and have a good time! So lucky you can walk there!

Spending my college days in Richmond led to some awesome adventures. I took my dog to Belle Isle all the time. I mean I did name him James after the James River so it will always hold a special place. Great Pics!
Haha, so cute!

Nice post. Its great to see that Richmond still has so many neat & fantastic things going on. With the collapse of circuit city 3 years ago we were forced to sell our house in the museum district and move to florida but I read you blog as one method to keep up with the old RIC. Maybe one day we can move back…..sigh. Its sunny and beautiful down here but pretty lacking in that quirky, arty youthful vibe that we loved. Glad that you guys really love it too!
Aw, Richmond misses you Kiera!

what a cool event!
We were in Richmond last fall and stayed near the canal walk and walked over to Belle Isle. But my absolute favorite thing over there was the pipe walk!!
Hey we have a Belle Isle here in Detroit! Though it is a far cry from what it once was. Maybe Sherry went there when she met Eminem! Ha ha

peace,
from the high five state
No way! That’s so funny! What a small world to have two Belle Isles!

I grew up in Detroit and used to love to go to Belle Isle (way way back in the day!). My daughter now attends VCU in Richmond and has spent a few sunbathing days on Richmond’s Belle Isle. Small world!
I applied to a job just because of how highly you guys speak of Richmond! I didn’t get it (it was a long shot!), but Richmond seriously looks like just the kind of place we should be raising our little one. In this part of Texas (actually, and the other part I lived before…so maybe it’s just Texas?) it’s nearly impossible to spend more than twenty minutes outside. Either it’s too hot, a storm’s a’ brewin, or everyone starts getting attacked by allergies, so we rarely get to go on little walk detours. Maybe we’ll just have to take a little vay-cay there soon instead!
Oh yes, come here to visit! You might fall in love and move here (like us). Haha.

Oooh I love being out on the different bridges out on the river! So relaxing. The pictures from the RVA art festival are awesome- we’ve yet to see the finished products- we’ll have to walk down there this weekend! Thanks for sharing!
Us too! Can’t wait to check them out all finished!

You guys definately make me want to visit VA one day…maybe once out kiddo is born we can bring our large jogging stroller out there and visit some awesome Richmond sights!
We’d be happy to have you!

This post just makes me smile :) I LOVE living in Richmond! Belle Isle is one of my favorite spots in the city.
Not to be too stalker-ish, but what happened to the joovy kooper stroller? Do you prefer the big jogger more?
We the Joovy still gets lots of use, but for longer walks we prefer the jogging stroller since the cupholders and snack track keep Clara much more entertained. And we knew this adventure might be a long one so we bit the bullet and shoved it in the trunk instead.
-John
I’m completely in love with living in Boulder, Colorado – but I admit that now I’ll be looking for an excuse to go vacation in Richmond. (You guys should check out Colorado some day, too. *hint* *hint*)
I’ve been to Colorado twice (Denver both times) and it seems like a great state. Once was for a family vacation, but I was like 9 so I don’t remember it that much. The other time was for a business trip so it was kinda a blah visit. I’d love to go back!
-John
I lived in Richmond for 6 month a few years ago and loved it. Belle Isle is such a fun place to go. Have you guys been to Sticky Rice? Their bucket of tots (with that dip) is AMAZING. To bad they don’t have an Orlando location :(
Have we ever – we loves us some Sticky Rice! And especially the tots. Yum.
-John
No more Joovy??
We still have the Joovy and it still gets lot of use, but for longer walks we try to lug the jogging stroller along because the cupholders and snack track keep Clara much more entertained.
-John
:)
Thanks for reminding me of the awesome things that Richmond has to offer! It’s easy to get caught up in the activities of 4 kids (3 are playing sports right now!), so thanks for the reminder! We live here too!
Great post! I’m going to have to work on hubby to take a vacay there; it looks so laid-back and relaxing. I never knew Richmond was a “river town.” I guess you could call Baton Rouge a river town, but I’m pretty sure that no one is able to go swimming (or would want to) in the Mississippi River, haha.
But this does have me really excited about a new project that will be happening soon in downtown Baton Rouge. A group of local artists just raised $25k to paint some murals on the buildings, and since I work downtown, I’m super excited about it! Can’t wait to watch them get their paint on!
That’s so awesome! It should be so much fun to watch!

I’m a former Richmond girl and love seeing all the RVA pics y’all put up. The canal and Belle Isle (and Bottoms Up!)are some of my favorite places to go when we visit my parents. Looks like y’all are having a beautiful spring up there, hope y’all enjoy it!
I used to visit Richmond on business. Loved it. Almost took a job there.
Richmond looks like an amazing place to live. I wish we were at the stage in our lives where we could just pick a city, move there and see what happens, much like you two did. Richmond would definitely be on our list, as after years of small town living, I have come to realize that I’m a city girl. But with three kids to consider, you have to find the job first, and there aren’t any academic librarian job openings in Richmond right now. I’ll just have to live vicariously through you!
Well if the job ever lines up, we’ve found Richmond is a great place to get a city feel without getting too overwhelmed. And you can quickly escape to the suburbs or country if you need a dose of something else.
-John
After your last ode to Richmond (I think it was about the outdoor mall), I e-mailed my husband “how about Richmond, VA?” :) We’ll be looking to move (hopefully to our forever home) after his medical residency, and you’re certainly selling me on Richmond!
And VCU has a great medical center! :)
-John
Andy has mentioned wanting to go to Virginia for a few years now (Williamsburg and Richmond) so we’ll definitely have to check this out if we ever get down there. We may be coming to VA to get a Suburban in the next year or two to get something without good old New England rust on it. If we do we’ll have to check this out! Thanks for posting. :)
We always love to hear of folks visiting Richmond – and W’burg has lots of great sites too. It’d be a fun trip!
-John
Wow- Now I want to move to Richmond! I had no idea there was so much going on.
My husband and I love Richmond. We live in Virginia Beach, so when we need a getaway, we go to Richmond and we feel like we’re really someplace different for only driving an hour and a half away. I love all the unique shopping and he loves the unique restaurants. For your next beach vacation, come visit Virginia Beach! It’s close to home and tons of fun!
What a nice post on Richmond with suggestions on things to do. I live in VA Beach and always think of Richmond being so dirty when I drive through. I only ever drive up there to go to weebsword but maybe I could do a few other things there!
Yeah, Richmond does not make the best impression from the highways. Unless you’re coming from the South it looks like an industrial wasteland sometimes. Someone should really work on that…

When you said street art I was expecting/hoping for chalk drawings on the streets!! My hometown, Lake Worth, FL, does an event every Feburary called Street Painting Fedtival and they close the downtown streets and artists use chalk to draw big fancy pieces of art on the street. You should google it. It’s pretty awesome and I miss going so much now that I live 3 hours away.
Sounds awesome!

OMG, I came home that weekend just for the show. That morning I went running down by Pony Pasture (I love the James River – which happens to be the only urban white water on the western hemisphere), and rewarded all of my hard work with a lunch from one of my favorite spots on Canal Street, Bottoms Up Pizza. Your pictures are fantastic and make me feel warm and fuzzy with a tinge of home sickness. Thanks for sharing!!!
I love that Pony Pasture run! And Bottoms Up! Glad you were able to make it into town for the day.
-John
In the second to last photo did Clara just get done saying “Word!”?
My best, Lynn
Ha! Looks like it – though it was actually just the end of the tickle.
-John
Oh Richmond is a wonderful place! I wish we lived closer. Even the surrounding areas of Richmond can keep you coming back! A funny fact: The same James River runs directly behind our house. :) We “float” the river on inner tubes in the summer. Lots of fun.
One of these days I will make it back to Richmond for a long weekend and check out some more of the awesomeness!! (I have a friend that regularly tells me I need to come visit and come see the sights!)
The first summer we lived here we went tubing on the James way out in the Charlottesville area. It was awesome!
-John
Reading this made me even more excited that we are relocating to VA (from AZ) in the next couple months. My husband is in the Army and will be stationed at Ft. Lee – which doesn’t look that far from Richmond. Can’t wait to see/taste/experience all the new things!
Fort Lee is definitely in the Richmond metro area (maybe a 25 minute drive?) so you’re in luck. Good luck with the move and here’s an early welcome to Richmond!
-John
I work in the Troutman Sanders Building, at least until next Friday…
I will miss the canal for sure and the beautiful river views from my office there.
Taking that stroll at lunch was a major plus, too!
AHH this post makes me miss living in richmond SOOO much. i live in the richmond to the south… aka chapel hill, nc but lived in richmond for a long time after college. say hello to my friends at the Richmond Comedy Coalition for me! (i used to perform with them :))
Will do! We’re gonna go see them tonight actually!
-John
Yay! I love that you guys are always out and about doing Richmond things!! The street art festival was amazing! I work with HandsOn GreaterRVA and we got all the volunteers together for the Ed trask and Chris Milk murals! It was so so much fun! Thanks for promoting our wonderful small city and I’ll keep hoping to run into you guys soon ( in a not stalking way at all…I swear I too go to the south of the James market all the time ;) ) RVA love!
Thanks for being part of such a wonderful event! We’re so grateful people have the inspiration to do things like this.
-John
This post made me all nostalgic for Richmond. I went to college at VCU and my husband did his residency at MCV. We used to play hooky from class and go ride our bikes at Belle Isle. I’m glad the art scene is doing well, VCU has a first rate art program (I might be a tad biased).
I would love to slap those boards with the fish up on my family room wall right now!
Making a mental note of all the places everyone has mentioned. We just relocated here a month ago from Austin, great city. I’ve been trying to find neat places to go…recently we went to Kuba Kuba and took our kiddos across the street to the park after.
Love Kuba Kuba!
-John
Great pics! I was also at Spring bada bing, and left there to go see the art on the canal walk that weekend as well. We had a great time just taking in the scenery and the art. I actually used to work in the James center (one of the twin brown buildings in the ninth picture down) and would spend my lunch breaks just exploring. For some reason, I’ve never actually been to Bell Isle, but after looking at these pics, I am definitely going to have to walk that bridge very soon.
The street art festival was amazing! I love how they’re planning to repaint every two years and make it a biannual festival. It’s such a great idea!
Have you guys (I mean y’all) ever been to Austin? Reminds me of Richmond…from what I can see online. :) Love living in the ATX. ;)
We haven’t but are dying to go because we hear so many great things. Hoping our book tour will take us there. Fingers crossed!
-John
