Ready To Read Some Subtitles?
When I managed to capture Clara’s morning chatter-fest on camera the other day, we couldn’t help but try to decipher the one-sided conversation for you guys. Hence the subtitles. There was still a lot of unintelligible babbling, but we got some clear statements about airplanes, other kids, fire trucks, and what sounds distinctly like slang for passing gas (although it’s nothing she learned from us- haha).
Even though we couldn’t figure out every sentence, it was funny to try to subtitle Clara’s babble fest. The girl talks a mile a minute and jumps from topic to topic just like her mom.

Hilarious! My two year old does the same thing, everyday there are new words and phrases. I love this age. :)
How can one help but smile at this little pip-squeak…she is adorable, smart, vivacious, and a talking toddler. Enjoy every minute.
Blink!!!
She will be 21.
B.
Little-kid babble is one of my favorite things ever. They so clearly know what they’re talking about even if no one else does! I tried out YouTube’s audio transcription for the stretch you were unsure about… Here’s what it says:
“And Katie Crystals exports tangles boulevard, rental homes, Dan, experimenting princes appearance jurists poorer cake you’d team luck.”
Pretty sure that’s not what Clara was talking about.
Also, who’s Bridget?
BWA-HA-HA! That translation is HILARIOUS. Good idea! I should try it out more often.
Oh, and Bridget is the the little girl next door who’s about a year older than Clara. Her bedroom window faces our house so sometimes she waves to Clara from there.
-John
hahaha, that was so cute.
Ha ha ha – it’s encouraging to know that I’m not the only person who doesn’t know what she’s saying. Even her parents are stumped sometimes! I love how you were following her around filming and she’s not even looking at you. “Oh yeah, those are my paparazzi. I just ignore them.” :)
This is hilarious! Great idea on your part to add the subtitles. It will be fun to watch it when she’s older. Too cute!!
Sooooo cute – I love the morning babble! She’s quite the talker!
I think what she was trying to say, the parts you missed, were that she loves her mommy and daddy and burger very much, and that she’ll be attending Princeton University, thank you very much!
What a smart, vivacious young lady!!
(I’m going to try and translate my niece’s speech tonight – she’s 21 months old and has a LOT to say!)
Did you also catch in that part that she’d be paying for her ivy league education? Or getting some killer scholarship? :)
-John
That was genuinely hilarious.
My favorite part:
“What’s that?”
“I think that’s drool.”
“Yeah… yucky” and then she moves on with more chatter.
This was amazing! I think translating Clara-talk should be a regular think on YHL!
I know, right? Sometimes when she talks so much she gets very drooly (notice the front of her shirt too) so it’s like she’s chatting about evidence of her own chatter.
-John
Haha, that was my favorite part, too!
Same here! I burst out laughing when she went “yeah… yucky” and then continued on. Too adorable, guys!
Favorite post yet on Younghouselife! Could she be any cuter, funnier and smarter i swear!
So funny! Overall, and especially in the parts where you can’t interpret her, the video makes it seem like she’s a little foreign dictator (a little crazy in the head, like most of them are!) running around and talking to herself! I think you should make another subtitled version interpreting all the phrases in light of the little dictator’s clear obsession with taking over the world. (Or maybe that’s just what I would do with a video like this of one of my kids. :)
Hahaha that was soooo funny!! What a sweet little lady! I don’t have any children yet, but when I do, I hope they’re just as chatty as she is. Thanks for sharing the adorable video!
Seriously made my morning.
I think this should be a weekly segment, it is so clever!! Had me cracking up at my desk, especially when you threw in the Fart??? Clara will be doing your house tour videos in no time!
That would be an awesome video – to have Clara do a house tour!!!! There should also be one of her interacting with Burger. She is too cute.
that would be such a great idea to have her do house tours!! especially in babble subtitles
haha she’s sooooo cute!
So we don’t let our almost one year old watch TV much – it’s on maybe once a week when she’s still awake – and she doesn’t get to see many other kids either. Needless to say, she was FASCINATED as I was watching this at the breakfast table this morning.
That is too precious.
I’m pretty sure I heard ‘hashish’ in there somewhere! I hope that’s a DIY term I’m unfamiliar with…
Ha! She probably got that from the same stranger who taught her the word “fart.”
-John
Hahahaha, she definitely said “Fart” and I cracked up at the leg kick when she did it! And after that she says “??? I farted”
I KNOW she didn’t learn that from you guys! ;-) Must be something she picked up from Bridget (haha, just kidding, in case Bridget’s folks read the blog!).
Could have been the second YoBaby! lol…awesome video
So cute! My kids are 16 and 14 now, and I really miss this stage! I agree with Grace – Translating Clara-talk should be a regular thing on YHL. It is such a joy to watch!
Oh my gosh, this is so cute. What a good idea to “translate” her babble and I’m sure it will be so fun to look back on in future years and remember her sweet little voice and conversations.
My favorite part is when she skip-gallops from the kitchen to the office – so darling.
She is so cute & sweet, I do not know how you guys get anything done. I would be following her around all day just to hear that babble.
That’s the most adorable thing ever! Precious little girl. :)
I think she’s doing a house tour Clara style in three different languages! haha
Totally! Though she missed about half of the house so she’ll have to work on that for next time.
-John
“Ground! It’s on the floor.”
She is so profound! Too cute. Some of that could totally be printed up and passed off as poetry. Maybe framed for your hall gallery?
She’s a poet and she doesn’t even know it. :)
-John
That is hilarious. She reminds me so much of my daughter – they’re both very precocious! My daughter wakes up talking and doesn’t stop all day. That little gallop with the arms up, too looks very familiar. :) I giggled throughout this whole video – you all should make this a regular installment of Young House Life. :)
I like how she doesn’t even require a response from you. She just talks and talks and entertains herself! :)
Can’t. Handle. The. Cuteness.
Clara is the cutest.thing.ever. Love all the video clips of her cuteness and babbling!!
abso-freakin-lutely adorable. smiled through the whole thing! just spent the Easter weekend with my 3 nieces (6, 4, 2) and could just eat them up. a daily dose of toddler chatter-fest is part of a healthy diet :)
OMG! She’s too cute!
My little sister used to speak “Japanese” or what we could only assume was another language… at least you can decipher some of what Clara is saying! She is so smart for her age… keep these videos coming, they are sooo hilarious and adorable!
How adorable. The part when she was walking from room to room talking about how she watches the tv, reminded me a little of the house tour you gave a few weeks back on your other blog. Maybe Clara was trying to give her own little house tour in her own kinda way.
I love the sub-titles.
LOVE! Please add subtitles to more of your videos! And it is one of those timeless memories. Further down the road, as speech develops you might not remember how she said certain phrases.
The auto-transcribe on youtube is so frustrating sometimes, seeing that I am deaf and its obvious what I do hear doesn’t match up with what I read.
Let me assure you, in case you were in any doubt: this cute little video will become a treasure. When Clara is 14 or so, you’ll watch this video, put your hand on your heart, and cry wistful tears. I wish I had taken more video.
What a smartie she is, too!
Cute!
Was the “Fire its ok” reference to your Hawaii restaurant episode ?
Yep! Anytime she sees fire, a picture of fire, something that resembles fire, is orange and yellow, or sounds like the hiss of fire she starts saying “Fire’s hot! It’s okay.”
-John
That was awesome! My girls quit doing anything as soon as I get the camera out. :)
That’s why I never got down on her level! It was easier to keep the camera from distracting here if she wasn’t thinking about it because these days she often asks to hold it if she sees the camera out.
-John
Why John, from here I can understand every word! She was giving a most excellent room tour and a general rehash of the past 10 or so months! She is like a mini recording of you guys! With plastic carrot description intermingled.
Ha! You’re totally right.
-John
OMG! That is just the cutest thing! I’m so glad you did a translation video for us-sometimes when you put a Clara video on and tell us it’s about so-and-so, but I’m usually in the dark about what she is saying. I thought you guys were geniuses to know what she was talking about. Now I feel a little less dumb! (I WISH I had done something like this when my boys were little-sigh)
This is so cute!! I love it.
I literally laughed out loud at my desk at work when she said “Yobaby” and “fart” ..then she said “Yobaby” again and I lost it hahaha so cute!
O.M.G. too cute!!! I love her lil voice…and she’s def on the go. ha!
That just made my day! Thank you for sharing!!
She is so cute! Nice house tour!
I think after she says “go splashing in the ocean, okay”, she says “what do you think of that?”.
Oooh, maybe!
-John
It looked like she glanced up at the girl swimming picture in the kitchen at that point.
That made my night. Thank you.
Thank you! I heard “what do you think of that?” also.
That is awesome! When you show this to Clara when she is older, you will all be cracking up! She seems like she is super smart, just like her parents!!
This is so cute! I love the part about staring at people through the window… haha!
My son is 21 months and Clara reminds me so much of him! Especially the “Okay?” parts. He’ll say: “Juice? Okay” “Ready go Liam? Okay.” Before we even have a chance to say yes or no he’s already saying okay. Love this age so much!
John, I have no clue how you managed to remain silent while filming her up until the drool comment like 3 minutes in. I would have been chuckling the entire time. Too funny!
I’m so used to it by now I guess maybe I’m desensitized to how amusing it sometimes. :)
-John
I’m so glad you guys have posted lots of Clara videos recently, love watching them! Keep it up!
I love her impression of the fire truck siren “nee-naa, nee-naa!” Too cute!
Us too! She learned it from a Maisy book.
-John
