We’re Home
We’re still sorting through Hawaii vacation pictures and working on writing a post about our travels (and one specifically about traveling with a toddler for you guys over here), but we thought we’d share this quick video that we shot just a few minutes after we got home in the meantime. We’d just come off a series of 3 flights (including a red eye) during which there was less sleep than we’d hoped (to put it gently) so we figured Clara would pretty much pass out the moment we stepped through our front door.
Nope. She went straight for her play kitchen.
More on our travels later!

I guess this is a testament to how resilient kids are! I’m keeping my fingers crossed that my kids come off our 7.5 hour flight to London in a few weeks with the same attitude!! Need to read up on the tips that your readers gave because I’ll need every tip in the book!
At the end, did she really say “that’s what you think”???
hahahaha!
Hope you ALL got some sleep after that.
Haha, that would have been hilarious! I think she actually said “close the door” which basically means “let me play with my play kitchen and scram.”

Hahaha – I thought she said “This is over” as in, turn the video off, I want to play with my kitchen set! Such a funny lady.
Haha, too funny!
xo,
s
Hah! I thought she said “This shits ovah”
Haha, no curses have been uttered yet. Thank goodness! But lots of talk of poop and toots, much to my embarrassment.

So cute! Looks like you moved the play kitchen into the bedroom? Is that just temporary due to everything moved around for the book shoots or do you anticipate keeping it in there?
We moved it due to book chaos but she actually likes it in there now so it might stay. Except some mornings she wakes up and says “Kitchen! Right now! Please and thank you! Get me! Wanna play with kitchennnnnnn!” because it’s the first thing she sees. Hahah.

Little Miss Clara is such a sweetheart! I love how she’s putting soap on her hands and washing them at the beginning and then can’t say “No!” to going to sleep fast enough!
Oh yes, she loves to fake wash her hands!

So cute!!! Night night!!! I’ve got to get a kid. :)
Ha! My kid just got back from a transatlantic flight! Same conversation and bleeriness! :)
(John – you sound like Dax Shepard – has anyone told you that before?)
Oh my gosh, he does!
xo,
s
Haha, he DOES sound like Dax… that’s so hilarious. I like how Clara was all “I said NO!” Very assertive young lady! :)
So adorable! Everytime I see this play kitchen it makes me so happy….such a fun thing to play with your little :)
My son is the same way when he’s tired–I can’t figure out where they get the energy!
umm. . . did she point to herself at the end and say, “This is Clara?” Cause I laughed really obnoxiously hard at that.
I think she actually said “close the door” – which basically means she wants us to leave her alone and let her play with her kitchen instead of putting her to bed. Haha.

Oh the joys of traveling with a toddler! How is it that they can keep going on so little sleep and us poor parents are about to drop! I flew with my 2 girls (then 2 and 5) to Georgia by myself and let me tell you – the hardest part was on the plane! My 2 yr. old would not keep still or be quiet! Even with a portable dvd player. My friends were all surprised that I would attempt airports with 2 young kids, but I said that was the easy part – just put them in the stroller and go where you need to. No, the hard part is keeping the little ones entertained in such a confined space! But for Hawaii – I think I’d persevere too :)
Yes! Layovers were no sweat. Sealed up in that place = so hard! You have to be “on” and react at a second’s notice before they lose it!
xo,
s
Oh yes, being ‘on’ describes it perfectly Sherry! Thank goodness you survived :) And what awesome memories!
Hilarious and adorable! At least if she’s not sleeping it must make you feel good that the first thing she wanted to do was use her kitchen when you got home! Time well spent, Santa.
Haha, oh yes, Santa was really proud. And tired.

s
She’s so adorable! I love the shirt on Clara! It looks like she’s wearing a “Burger” original. Was Burger glad to see y’all?
Yep! Although he didn’t seem to have missed us as much as we thought. It was kinda of the same greeting we get when we come home from the grocery story. Oh well – guess he doesn’t have a great sense of time after all.
-John
And Sherry did too, right? (Straight to her awesome kitchen)
:)
Haha- it’s true!

My baby grand niece, who’s 19 months old, got a kitchen for Christmas from her uncle. She opened the gift at her Mimi’s house and it stayed there for a grand total of 1 day before they moved it to her house.
It’s MARCH and she still walks over to the corner where it stood, covered with a sheet, and says, “Kitchen was here” every time she’s in the den!
Once she opened that gift, it didn’t really matter what else Santa brought – she was done! D.O.N.E.
Haha- so cute!

Up for thirty-six hours? My she looks fresh – and nope, doesn’t need to go to sleep. You poor things :) Sweet dreams beautiful girl! Can’t wait to hear about your on plane adventures. Some of my favourite holiday photos are of our 18 month old son sleeping soundly when we flew from Perth to Darwin (5 hours between cities in Australia).
bahahahaha.
“are you tired?”
“yes”
“do you want to go to sleep”
“no”
that was hilarious!
I love how toddlers tell you about their day by repeating random phrases. Who are Tom Tom and Jerry? She says goodbe to them at the beginning.
Tom Tom and Grammy are my parents and they picked us up at the airport, so they had just left before we shot this video.
-John
So adorable! My desire for a baby increases just a little bit every time I see her! :)
She’s enunciating so well! Who are Tom Tom and Jamie?
Tom Tom and Grammy are my parents, who accompanied us on our Portland leg of the trip so she’s started to pull their names into any conversation about airplanes lately!
-John
Awe,she missed her kitchen :-)
She is SUCH. Good talker! Smarty pants that girl…..
She’s such a cutie! She’s growing up so fast! :)
Oh my your baby girl is growing up! I can’t believe how chatty she is! Isn’t it just yesterday she was a baby, and now she’s a little girl <3
I know! Sniffle.

She is too cute! Our baby girl is 8 weeks now, and I love checking in on Clara and imagining the adventures we’ll have when our kiddo gets bigger. Hope she slept a good, long time after you shot the video!
Clara’s tshirt is out of control. In a good way. So cute:)
I love the videos of Miss Clara. She’s so cute. I’ve never been much of a kid person (probably won’t have any myself), but if I could be guaranteed to have one as cute as Clara, I might change my mind and take the plunge :)
How long did she sleep after finally passing out?
Fifteen hours! We all slept until 1pm the next day! So crazy!
xo,
s
she is too cute! where did you get that little kitchen? sorry if you’ve mentioned that before but i’m kinda new to your blog.
We actually made it. Here’s that post for ya: http://www.younghouselove.com/2012/01/claras-christmas-kitchen/

Clara is one month YOUNGER than my son and she has so many more words than he does. And stringing them together into a sentence! I’m so jealous! It really is true that girls speak younger than boys. I like to think it’s because we have SO much more worthwhile to say! hehe.
Haha, it’s true! Gals can sure be chatty!
xo,
s
LOVE the she is wearing a Chihuahua shirt! How excited was she to see Berger?
So excited! We all missed him so much!
xo

Adorable! She is a champ – sleep deprived and still time for a little light cooking. :)
She’s entered that crazy lack of sleep I can’t help but clean up my kitchen state…hope you got some sleep!
Awww…so sweet. Now, go “nigh, nigh” Clara so your mama and dada can get some shut-eye! ;)
Welcome back! We traveled to Hawaii with our 13 month old for Christmas. I was so nervous about flying with our son from Boston to Hawaii. We made it there and back in one piece, but it’s definitely a tough trip with a toddler in tow. Hawaii was definitely worth it though!
“nooo!”
She is soooo cute!!! She reminds me of a 3 year old! Are you potty training her yet? She seems like she would really understand what to “do”.
We’re talking about it lots, but don’t think we can say we’re officially in potty training mode quite yet. But she knows the words “potty” and, well, some of the other less glamorous terms. :)
-John
Too cute!
Too funny! :)
She is so stinking cute. She talks SO WELL!

When you write a post about traveling with a toddler, could you include a packing list? We are taking our girl to Europe when she will be 15 months old and I’m already trying to figure out what she needs and what can just stay at home. My husband and I backpacked around New Zealand/Australia before she was born so we really prefer to pack light!
We’ll try to remember to include that! If not, we found just a few clothing items (we had a washer and dryer available) along with diapers and hats and sunglasses to protect her from the sun helped. We also brought her sound machine and blanket and stuffed animal from home so she would sleep well.
xo,
s
Thanks, that helps! Did you pack many snacks and drinks for the plane or did she just eat whatever they served on board? And did you have to bring sippy cups or does she drink out of a glass now?
Oh yes we packed lots of snacks and brought her sippy cup full of water!

Reminds me when we got back from my mother-in-law after being in planes all day she went straight to her play kitchen and said, “My kitchen!”. She played for about an hour or so before we had to tell her it was time to sleep.
Poor little pumpkin! She looks so tired….
