Do Not Disturb
Lately Clara has been very into magazines – even requesting them specifically (especially when a new pile of mail arrives). So this is becoming a typical scene around here:

Clearly she takes catching up on the latest gossip and entertainment news very seriously. Don’t bother a girl reading the latest on Jon Hamm.

haha – so cute!
General good rule of thumb: when there’s anything Jon Hamm in the room, don’t speak unless spoken to. That’s my rule when I watch Mad Men and any time he’s on 30 Rock. Your girl has good taste.
Good on you that she’s still rear-facing in her car seat! You should keep her this way until she outgrows the weight-limit for the seat being rear-facing (usually around 40lbs).
what a character!
Oh My Gosh!! That look in the 2nd photo is to die for!! I bet she’s such a character!
That is too cute!
J/W Why her car seat is still rear-facing? She’s a big girl ^.^
Here it’s recommended to keep them rear facing until they’re two! If you scroll up a car seat tech weighed in on it too!

Man they change recommendations fast! Four years ago it was one year old and 20 pounds! Is that uncomfortable for her legs? I mean definately go with safety, but I’m thinking that is not leaving much room for legs. Safety first though, my almost 10 year old is still in a booster b/c she is on the shorter side.
Nah, she doesn’t mind – and she’s super tall. Our doc said since they sleep so cramped up (she literally sleeps with her feet under her belly) they should be perfectly comfortable in a car seat.

We JUST turned our daughter around at age 2…she didn’t seem to mind being rear facing at ALL (and like Clara she would keep “busy” reading books, etc.) Many folks did ask about her legs, but again, didn’t seem to bother her one bit!
I was recently reading an article about child safety seats in Sweden and how it is common place for them to leave their children rear facing until 3 or 4 years of age. As a result the number of car related deaths in children under 5 last year was ONE! Where as in our country car deaths are the leading cause of death for the same age range.
As for the leg issue that most people seem to bring up…children ride very comfortably rear facing for the most part. I have a friend that still rear faces her nearly 4 year old and he sits indian syle and is happy as a lark. Another thing I hear a lot is “What about their legs if you get into an accident?” And to that the response is “Would you rather have a broken leg or a broken neck?”
Safety first!
I love, love that she’s still rear-facing. My son is just a couple of days younger than Clara and is also still rear-facing. He likes rear-facing but I think it’s mainly because he and his older brother can talk and play easier. ;)
I love all the comments on extended rear-facing! I was just going to commend you for keeping her that way. Our daughter RFed until over 3 yrs of age. Also, there is no research that documents cases of broken legs with extended rear facing kids.
I love that she’s catching up on the latest gossip & wanted to comment on the car seat, too. My daughter is 2 months younger than Clara and we still have her rear-facing. She doesn’t seem to mind, and after a friend told me in Europe they keep them rear-facing til 4 & 5, I just might keep her there for a while. I know people think their kids don’t like being cramped but that’s a great point about them sleeping scrunched up.
So glad to see I’m not the only one keeping my toddler rear-facing.
Oops… I think there’s a little typo in the title of the post! But super cute pics! :)
All fixed!

Spelling mistake in the post title!

So cute! I wonder if she likes certain ones over others; ie, fashion magazines?
She loves anything with J-Lo or Elvis. Seriously, she knows them by name.
xo,

That is hilarious that she knows them by name. LOL My husband would be proud, he LOVED ELVIS!!!! He thinks that Elvis is still alive, somewhere out there. ;-)
I don’t have the heart to tell her Elvis is gone, so as far as she’s concerned, he lives on. Like J-Lo! Haha.

Sherry, my 3-year old went with us to Graceland last month. We told him we were going to see Elvis’s house. Throughout the whole entire tour he kept asking, “where’s elbis? where’s elbis momma?” Poor little guy, we just had to say “he’s sleeping baby”. it was the funniest thing!
Haha, no way!

A girl of taste! So cute!
don’t you mean do not disturb? or is this meant to be written by a baby? so cute! :)
Haha, fixed!

How can you not love that first picture, where she is so carefully studying the magazine! So cute- obviously.
Do you mean the title of this post to be ‘DISTURB’, not “DISTRUB”?
Haha, yes!

I get the exact same look on my face when someone disturbs my Hamm time.
I’ve decided that future Ken Dolls should be modeled after him. I mean, Barbie pretty much looks like Betty, and they were a gorgeous couple.
I LOVE that you still have her rear-facing.
I wish more parents were aware of how much safer that is.
Go you!
too cute …
Please don’t take this as being snarky or anything – it’s not meant to be, I’m just genuinely curious. When my boys were younger, I was told to transition them to a front-facing car seat when they hit a year old and/or 20 lbs.
Have the rules on that changed? I’d really like to know, especially as I am thinking of re-opening my home day care. I’d like to be on top of things like that.
Thanks so much!
Now it’s recommended to remain rear facing until they’re over two!

I was actually going to comment that I am so happy to see Clara rear-facing! We actually just turned my 4-year-old forward facing when he hit the 40 lb mark, which is the max rear-facing for his seat. The longer, the safer ;)
Super cute pics!
no need to post this comment, just wanted to let you know in your post title I think you accidentally spelled “Disturb” as “Distrub”. You guys are the best!
Thanks for the tip Lindsey!

One of the kids that I nanny turned me as she was perusing us weekly yesterday and said look MacNcheese. I giggled cause I knew she was on the page listing MacNcheese and salt as one of Jessica Simpsons prego cravings hahahaha
HA So funny! It’s awesome that she’s showing an interest in reading though; it will serve her well the rest of her life. Great job parents!
Did John type this post without Sherry proofreading it? I spy a title typo… ;)
Spill it! I actually typed this, so I must just be missing it! Update: d’oh the title! Just got it.

Haha that is so funny, I have an 18 month old and she enjoys looking at magazines and catalogs, but she doesn’t look quite as grown up while looking at them. :)
that second picture is too funny! Girl on a mission!
So glad to see Miss Clara is still rear facing! So many people look to you guys for more than just home improvement ideas and it’s great to see you setting such a good example (and you’re using seatbelt instead of LATCh because Nissan doesn’t allow LATCh in the middle!). Obviously she’s okay with being rear facing as she’s being thoroughly entertained my her magazine. What a cutie.
That is hilarious. All she needs is her head full of curlers under a dryer. ;D
I notice that you guys have a Britax seat! My husband and I have been doing a lot of research on these, we’re expecting our first in August. We finally settled on the Britax Boulevard (or Marathon). Cool to see one in use!
As a person who has owned both of these seats I will recommend you go with the Boulevard over the Marathon. Both are awesome seats, don’t get me wrong, but the Boulevard is so much easier to use/adjust/clean/etc. Plus the adjustable head restraint on the Boulevard is a nice feature.
Always glad to see another tot under 2 backward-facing!
Me too! My in-laws are always ragging on me for having my 13 month old backward-facing. Safety first!
Adorable. Get her a subscription to Highlights High Five Magazine. My daughter has been reading it since she is about Clara’s age. Fun stuff – crafts, stories and recipes you can do together.
Oh yes I used to love reading that in doctor’s offices!
xo
s
I second that! I just got my 4 & 2 year old nephews a subscription for Christmas and they are loving it, according to my SIL
Typo in your title :)
Thanks! Fixed!

Well I can see she already has excellent taste in men. John Hamm = hubba hubba
Oh my, look at that glare – it’s like she’s a teenager already!
The serious look on her face made me laugh out loud. My neice used to love People magazine when she was about Clara’s age. It must be all those baby-faced celebrities! Oh yeah and happy 22 months Clara!
She is too cute! Our little guy also likes reading whatever he can get his hands on.
I debated on keeping my little man rear facing until two but one our car is small and makes it hard in the proper seat and positioning and two he loves being a ‘big boy’ and seeing where he’s going – bad excuse I know!
This amuses me very much! I also appreciate that you take such daily joy in having a two year old, and such a cute personality at that!
Glad to see she’s rear facing. You guys reach so many people~ way to be a good example! :) And it’s not just recommended where you live. The AAP recommends it for all kids nowadays. http://www.cnn.com/2011/HEALTH/03/21/car.seat.guidelines.parenting/index.html
Thanks for sharing the link Jen!

oh and- duh- I meant to say how cute Clara is in these pics too! I love her expression in the second one.
So adorable!
Great to see another toddler rearfacing! I always get weird reactions to my 31 lb almost 2 year old who is still rearfacing.
Now I just have to decide if I want to turn him around at 2. The thought of it scares the bejeezus out of me!
SO adorable. We are naming our little girl, due 5/4, Clara :)
No way! we’re a little biased, but we think it’s a great name. Haha.

I love that you have Clara rear facing still too! Great example guys!
Too cute! John is spelled Jon, but with such a cute post, I don’t think it much matters :)
Fixed!

So cute! Seeing all these pictures of Clara makes me want a little girl so badly – even though I wouldn’t trade my son for anything in the world!
I wish we could have kept Canon rear-facing until he was two. He got so tall that his knees were in his chest practically at around 20 months, so we had to turn him around. He loves it though and now, since he is over two, I don’t feel as bad! :)
sounds like she enjoys her gossip rags but if you’d like to get her her own magazine, I highly recommend Baby Bug (which is perfect for toddlers) or Ladybug (for ages 3+). Baby Bug is printed on plasticized paper that is very sturdy and has several short stories and songs with fun illustrations. My son (3 today!) still loves looking through those we received nearly 2 years ago. His aunt upgraded him to Ladybug recently but we switched back to Baby Bug as the stories in that were a bit long for us to read through the whole issue in one sitting, plus it’s more like traditional magazine paper (tho heavier weight paper) so I don’t think it will stand up to him as well. The Baby Bug issues are perfect for travel too because they’re a smaller trim size (fit in Mama’s purse) and he can read them on his own in the car seat or restaurant without me worrying about torn pages and some board books are unwieldly. The company that puts out these magazines actually has a whole family of mags for kids — boys and girls — of all ages thru at least preteen (I used to buy subscriptions for my much-younger cousins).
Sounds so cute!

Yay for still having her rear facing in her car seat!!!
We just got our little man the same carseat! If the Britax is good enough for Clara, it’s good enough for our Wesley! He’s 2 months old and we moved the bucket infant carseat to the nanny’s car when I returned to work. My husband already wants to turn him around because he wants to see him (we have a mirror…) but I’m preparing him for at least 2 years of rear-facing goodness! Thanks for keeping everyone up to speed on the new rear-facing regulations!!
Cute post, but the typo is “Do Not Distrub” I thought maybe you had done it on purpose.
Oh yes, I found it and fixed it! Thanks!

Too cute!!
Clara is such a hilarious little person! After playing with that gold chain in the kitchen several weeks back, I think it’s cute that she’s really into J. Lo and Elvis. She’s got an eye for the bling, so clearly she’s a Jersey girl at heart — just like her mama :)
Ooh, she’s serious! haha I really see John in her in the second photo! :)
This is funny! I love the look on her face. She means serious business. And I am so glad you still have her facing backwards.
Gotta love Clara!
