When Burger Met Clara
The new baby in the family had us feeling all nostalgic so we had some fun looking back at old photos of when Clara was born. Amongst which was this video, which I don’t think we ever shared (Sherry doesn’t even remember seeing it).
Here’s the set-up: Sherry and Clara were still in the hospital, so I was periodically going home to let Burger out. On one of the trips, I brought Clara’s hospital cap with me so Burger could get a first sniff of his little sister (we heard it would help him adjust to her arrival home – and it was really all we did to help him adjust other than bringing him a toy and a treat on the day we actually brought her home and showing him lots of love even with a newborn around). Anyway, since Sherry couldn’t be there for the cap-sniffing, I videotaped the moment for her to later watch from her hospital bed.
So glad the kiddos get along so well.

It looks like it could be an awesome video… but when I click to play it says “This video is private” :(
Hopefully when you take a break from kitchen remod you can fix that ;)
So sad, the video is private!
All fixed! Sorry about the delay guys!

And my heart is melted on the floor. I only hope that my pets will be as receptive as Burger when I have kids!
Never mind that previous comment. It’s working now!! Very Cute!!!!!
Aww that is so sweet!
Awwww! This is so cute. I am definitely nervous about introducing my dogs to my future baby someday! lol I am terrified that they won’t like him or her.
“I guess he loves her.” Hilarious! And really sweet too. Yay for your happy family:)
ADORABLE! looks like it was love at first sniff!!
SO cute. I’m a sucker for dogs and babies.
Erika your blog name just gave me a good laugh! Hahaha
Oh my gosh that is adorable! What a great idea to introduce furry babies to their siblings :)
I don’t think John could be any sweeter!
that’s so precious!
Hahaha, so cute! We talked about doing that for our cat, Ange, when Canon came along but we never got around to it. Maybe that is why Ange is STILL jealous and waiting for us to send Canon back from wherever he came!
Hahahahahha I love the end ‘uhh.. I guess he loves her’ and the huge grin :)
So cute
AWh…this is such a sweet video of the Burg-man! I have to say it’s so nice to see a family continue to embrace their dog even after baby arrives. It’s sad, but I see so many people think differently about their “fur-babies” after “real-baby” shows up and it makes me sad that if we ever have a “real baby” we won’t still love “fur baby”. Uhh…does that make sense? But it’s so nice that the sibs get along too ;-). Just love this video. Burgsie is such a good boy!
Aw I hope our 3 cats take to our new baby that well when he/she comes in May. It’s a very scary thought trying to bring our family together, but I’m pretty sure our one cat Macky is going to be the best big brother ever. He loves been chased around the house, that skill is bound come in handy in a few years right? :)
Aww! The beginning of a beautiful friendship!
hey john and sherry!
does burger bark a lot? we have two chihuahuas, and i worry about how we’ll get them to be quiet when we have a baby. and is clara still good about being gentle with burger?
Burger’s barky when someone rings the bell or he sees dogs outside. Once someone comes in he’s fine though. I think the barking is a protective thing. Like a warning. Once people are inside Burger figures we know so there’s no need for any more warnings. Haha. But he’s great with Clara- gentle and sweet. And she has learned to sleep right through his barking (she pretty much did that from day-one actually!).

That is too cute! We introduced our puppies (2 big doggies) to each of our kiddos when they were born too. Thanks for sharing. :)
That’s a good idea!
I had read the tip to let the dog “find” the baby so it would become their own discovery. So when hubs and I arrived home with our first bundle of joy I went hobbling into the house and down the hallway with our two little dachshunds following me (happy to see mama after being in the hospital a few days!), meanwhile, hubs sneaked in the baby and set the carrier down inside the door. A few minutes later the dogs “found” the baby and were just as busy smelling him as Burger was with that hat. :)
The plan seemeed to work well enough. They loved our new addition to the max.
So cute!

John’s smile at the end makes the video. Haha! Love it.
This is such a cute moment to look back on! I love at the end “He loves her”
AND, BONUS … FIRST HOUSE GLIMPSE!
(Fun tip, I actually typed old house, but thought first house was more fitting ;))
Ha! First house definitely works better. :)

This is SO adorable. I hope our pup takes to future kids as well as Burger did to Clara! :)
Awww our pup runs in crazy circles like that when he is excited too. We call it his “sillies.”
So cute to see how quickly he was okay with her smell.
Ummmm that was so cute. Brought tears to my eyes! We completely forgot to do the hat trick with our dog before we brought our son home, but he was SO excited to see us, and was like, “OHHH what’s this? Did you bring me home a new puppy?” And then he realized that the new “puppy” cried all the time and took up all of mom and dad’s attention and he wasn’t as much of a fan…but he *was* very protective of him :)
so so so so cute! Burger…is adorable!
This video makes me laugh! I like that Burger’s tail wags so fast sometimes you can’t even see it!
Cutest video ever.
Favorite things
1- Burger violently wagging his tail while sniffing his sister’s smell
2- John’s doggie voice
3 – Burger going a lil crazy on the bed
4 – “Um, I guess he loves her”
Love it!!
I love how excited Burger is! Too cute!
So sweet! Such early days – is that a hospital bracelet on Johns wrist? Clara will love this when she’s older!
Yep!

Great idea! Love hearing the birds in the background…reminds me of a sunny spring day (instead of the reality that I’m bracing myself for Winter to hit soon). Clara can look back on this and see how beautiful one of her first days on earth was. Ah, the power of technology.
P.S. I think Burger would be BFF with my pug :)
I was just going to say I love hearing the chirping of the birds in the background :) It makes the whole scene even more idyllic.
That is so sweet! Reminds me of when our furbaby Joel was totally obsessed with smelling our twins when we brought them home. He would stand on his back legs to see them in their little cradles.
This is my favorite picture of my dog meeting my son. He must have sat and stared at him for 30 minutes.

More videos of Burger please!
Seriously adorable!
So cute!!
John, do you wear your wedding ring on your right hand? My husband wanted to do that because he’s left handed. Just curious :)
Haha- a million points for noticing that! Things were so crazy during/after Clara was born (more on that here), John somehow put it on the other hand during a particularly crazy moment (he doesn’t even remember doing it) and didn’t notice that it was on his right hand until a few days later when he quickly switched it back! So weird.

Yeaaaahh I’m gonna be the weirdo here and note that Burger’s hot dog ;) is quite impressive for his size! Good for you, Burgs. Good for you.
Aw! my son is only 4 months old, but I get so nostalgic going through the old pictures and videos – especially if it’s a pic/video that one of us took, and the other never got a chance to see :)
Love it the Burger’s tail goes so fast that the video camera can’t keep up – he’s so cute.
We did this decades ago (my son is about your age, a little younger), and left the pieces in the crib. My dog (female) immediately took up residence under the crib – she even drug her bedding in there (no bottom storage drawer). W’s dog (male) took to laying across the threshold of the nursery. It was like “we are denning here now.” LOL
“I guess he loves her. :D” <– loved the big grin at the end!
We did this with Zoey (dog) & Tyler (son) too. Worked like a charm. Zoey settled onto Ty’s hospital blanket for a nice nap and my husband sent a pic of it to us at the hospital. They’ve been best buds ever since.
