Whatever It Takes To Get The Shot
Who knew photographing a kitchen could be so death defying?

Forgive the poor picture quality. Obviously the good camera was in use. And of course this was taken before we did this (part of the counter and cooktop are no longer there). Ah, the joys of tearing the kitchen apart.
If only picking a countertop was as easy as demoing the old one…

LOVE IT!!! :) Gives me good ideas but at 36 weeks pregnant I don’t think I should do the same. Hehe. ;)
Can’t wait to see your new kitchen!!!
Haha As a shutterbug myself, I LOVE this and your commitment to great content on your blog!
Haha! if only people knew what went on behind the camera!
I did a photoshoot once of a toddler, i was lieing on the floor level with him on field, and a random dog ran out of no where and cocked its leg and pee’d on me!
So embarressing… :)
Are you going to leave the fan in your kitchen? I’ve been having this dilemma in my own kitchen recently. Someone told me you’re not meant to have a fan in the kitchen but sometimes I feel it comes in handy when cooking something stinky or you burn something. I open all the windows and doors to air it out quickly with it.
Nah- we never use that thing and didn’t have one in our last kitchen- a good vent hood does the trick!

I hate the fan in our kitchen. We have a gas range and the fan just messes is up. It’s so annoying!
I have been there…many times! Ha ha
Hah, I have to do some crazy maneuvers to get pictures of my kids too!
haha love it! I’ve got to say, I’ve been caught in some awfully contorted positions to get a good photograph as well. Leg up on a rail while half squatting with the other leg while bent at the side. The best photos come from it though!
Just wanted to say that everyone asking about kitchen updates in the Gap On The Wall post made me laugh. I’m really surprised that you guys post as much as you do in the process of a kitchen overhall! Love Your Blog! Blessings, T
That is dedication!
P.s. I think it’s pointless when people say you post filler posts. I think they forget you and John are humans and not machines :) sorry just had to say that after seeing that as a comment today.
I don’t know if this helps at all, but the Boston Globe had a consumer report blurb comparing the different types of countertop materials: http://articles.boston.com/2011-09-04/business/30113474_1_solid-surface-laminate-countertop
Thanks!!!

CAREFUL! :)
This is pretty funny! I’ve had many moments where, after I’m done shooting something, I wonder if I was actually remembering to be safe during it. Here’s to all of us being careful. :)
I gotta know what picture was being taken here!!!
It was one of the ones for this post- probably one we didn’t even use. Haha.

Haha. Who knew?! I feel your pain on picking out a countertop. We just decided on ours: http://ourhumbleabowed.wordpress.com/2011/10/21/countertop-specifications/ We’ve decided on wood! I thought you had mentioned DIY concrete counters?
I love wood! Since we have wood in the office as the top (which is right off the kitchen) we thought it would be too much! Otherwise I’d be all over dark butcher block. We did talk about concrete but we’ve learned that it won’t work in our kitchen due to the weight/overhang. So sad.

oh ewwwwwww! feet on the counter! lol!
Haha- then we had to go and demo it out. It was “foot contaminated”…

Rule #1 when demoing/renovating a kitchen: Don’t start until you have all the bits and pieces all picked out…
I have a friend whose parents are doing their kitchen 1 project at a time. In theory, I guess it could work, but they 1) bought $7K worth of designer appliances, 2) did NOT measure them for the kitchen, 3) tore out cabinets without having new ones picked out, ordered or delivered, 4) did not have a countertop picked out, OR a floor plan, which had to be revised when the fridge didn’t fit where the last one was, 5) they’re waiting now for the countertop they finally ordered, but they don’t have a backsplash picked out…
And btw, when I say they don’t have something picked out, I mean they are on two opposites sides of the spectrum: dark vs. light, wood vs. laminate, wood vs. tile, stainless vs. white, etc., etc.
My head would explode!
Haha, yeah we knew going into this that it would probably not be done until January (our last kitchen took us 113 days) but we’re happy to just take things one small step at a time!

Keepin’ it real, YHL! Love it!
Next time, for those extra two inches, open the cabinet and shove your rear inside. lol
Hahaha, I would have loved to get that shot.

Now that is dedication! :)
Go John! Ahh the perks of being an adult, no one yells at you to get off the counters!
Too funny – those monkey toes work for climbing counters as well as walls!
I don’t think we’ve ever seen this angle of the kitch before!
Wow – well done John! Such fun to see some of the antics that go on behind the scenes. No wonder you two enjoy working together!
Ha! That reminds me of myself, clamoring up on the dining table and window sills to get the right shot of my bento boxes. :p
Hello,
What DSLR camera do you have? Would you recommend it to someone is getting their first DSLR? I seem to remember that until fairly recently you guys used a point and shoot.
We have a D3000 -it’s our first and we love it. There’s definitely a learning curve with all DSLRs but we’ve been really happy with ours. We’d had it around a year and a half now (got it right before we had Clara).

Thanks for the camera recommendation.
1. I dont think I ever noticed the fan in the kitchen…weird.
2. I am so sad that the concrete counters won’t work…I was really looking forward to seeing how y’all would do them…and I think they are gorgeous!
Can’t wait to see what y’all wind up picking!
Too funny! Good luck with your countertops. :)
Go John, get that shot!
You two are smart to take your time deciding about your countertops. I wished I had taken more time in deciding what granite to choose when renovating my kitchen and 2 bathrooms. I loved the granite (crema bordeaux) then, but now a year and a half later I wish I had picked something else with less movement and lighter in color. Sigh.
